Lincoln Square. It's a good mix of new-school trendy/hip and old-school time-warp Chicago. It's also the best place in town to indulge my German heritage Though I think I'd cheat it a little and say "combination Lincoln Square/northern St. Ben's" mostly to get in a couple more German institutions.

Hyde Park: great variety of people, bookstores, libraries and foods. Nice to be on the lake without being rich; lots of parks.
