Default AA Southsider moving up north needs advice.

Ok im a young professional AA from the southside grew up in pillhill and chatam.
I want to move to the northside. My goal is to keep my expenses rent plus utilities to around 800-900.,because I work a sales job with up and down months. Some months I make 1800 and other months i make 2600 after taxes

I want to be close a cheap cab ride from rush/division, rivernorth, and wrigleyville. I am 24 and these are my stomping ground. I was in rogers park at hamiltons and decided to go to wrigleyville and the cab ride one way was was 14 bucks. I dont if that was because I had people with me. but I was considering Rogers Park but it seems to far from my social spot. I could take the trains but at 1am on the weekend partially intoxicated that may not be wise choice even for a tough south sider like myself.

I prefer not to live in lakeview but will if thats the most viable options.
uptown, edgewater, rogers [ark all seem the optimum spots for me to live socio-economically, though I like the main strip of bars in wrigley its not the best place for a urban aa to live socially in comparison to other neighborhoods.

but uptown and rogers park seem to far way from my stomping grounds
and as far as crime goes being a blk dude from ssouthside chatam uptown and rogers park should be no sweat for me,but unlike the southside I dont know the safe blocks, and I also have white and middleclass blk freinds who might feel un comfortable in those spots particularly the ladies.

The west and south loop seem like viable options but are a little pricy especially the southloop,

so where should I move.

Tough one. I wonder if East Village might work though?

I used to live a couple of blocks from Division / State, in a "studio" apt. . . .small but very convenient, and cheap (@100 a month) but that was back in the early 70's, still, those kinds of places must still exist (mine was in a brownstone a couple of blocks south of Lincoln Park, and a couple of blocks east of the Lake). . . .they will be more expensive now, but I'll bet they are out there in your price range.

It really depends on what you want for $800-$900/month. You can get a studio almost anywhere for that price.

Lakeview or Lincoln Park would make a lot of sense geographically but if diversity is important to you then they might not be as ideal. You could also live in Wicker Park and still be a pretty close cab ride to Rush/Division.

I also would look at Old Town. There are still a fair amount of AA there from Cabrini (though not in your economic demo) and the people there are generally a tad older/educated from what I've been around. There are tons of racist 20 somethings in Wrigely and I agree that it might not be ideal for an AA to live there where Old Town is a bit more open. You might be able to find a studio for ~900 around there.

Well, come to think of it, I guess a brownstone a couple blocks east of the Lake would put it in New Buffalo or Benton Harbor or Saugatuck or some place. So, that would be not so much damp as one hell of a commute to the Loop!

Edgewater is great & might be your speed, I have a close AA friend (Chicago native) who just moved there after bouncing around Wicker Park, Lake View and Logan Square, she loves it.
