Default Best Chicago neighborhood to live in if you work from home & don't have to commute to work?

Hi there,

I am moving to Chicago early next year and want to choose which neighborthood to live in, wisely.

I will be working from home, so I don't have to worry about the commute to work.

I am single, mid-30s.

I will be renting for the first year. My price range is $2000-$3000 per month.

The 2 most important things to me are: great views (lake, city or park) and close proximity to everything (shops, bookstores, grocery stores, restaurants, parks, lake, movie theaters, cafes).

Quiet, tree-lined streets do not really appeal to me unless they are no more than a block or two away from the hustle and bustle.

My friends in Chicago have recommended: Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Roscoe Village, Old Town, and Gold Coast.

Thank you for any insight. Cheers!

I would take Roscoe Village right off your list. It's not really a neighborhood with a view and doesn't have as much "hustle and bustle" as some of the others. The others work best, depending on what exactly you're looking for in terms of a vibe. You may want to stroll through these areas, check out the sort of shops, restaurants, and hot spots you'd be interested in, and make an informed opinion that way.

Some of the high rises of the South Loop have killer views of Grant Park and the high rises to the north. Depending on what sort of hustle & bustle you are looking for the proximity from most apartments in the South Loop is hard to beat -- you are walking distance to the Bears at Soldier Field, college basketball at UIC for the Flames, short Red Line ride to the White Sox...

LP or GC, Logan is a pretty poor selection and street action in the south loop in the form of bars/restaurants isn't there yet. With a budget like that and a desire for lake/city views, no reason not to move to LP or the GC.

Scratch Roscoe Village off the list and you're good to go. All the rest of the neighborhoods on your list have highrises along the lake shore. Add to that list South Loop, but with the understanding that its nightlife is a work in progress.

Thank you so much. I'm adding South Loop and removing Roscoe Village from the list. Again, thank you

You could add Streeterville too. You'll be closer to a hospital though (NMH) so I don't know if sirens would not disturb you. GC is little better but there is still a lot of going on there and there are really nice apartments there close to lake.

I used to live in Mcclurg Court and its nice there, but you might wanna check first if there are better apartments in the price range they offer.

If I had up to $3,000/mo to spend and wanted to be near shops/cafes/nightlife/etc., Bronzeville wouldn't even figure into the decision. South Bronzeville in particular is a combat zone.
