Thank you for your detailed information

I check Craigslist at least 3 times a day, but I haven't seen any good listings for 2 weeks because January is the worst month for the apartment hunters. Good places are taken right away and only bad ones are sitting on the list like forever. If we can't find any better place than the Avondale pad until Jan 15, we might take it because it has everything we wanted and our time is running out.

It's a good neighborhood and exciting to live here. It's the next up and coming neighborhood. Think of it as the next Logan Square. Lots of stores and new bars are constantly opening up in the neighborhood.

However, it is becoming fairly hipster, but not that it is particularly a bad thing.

I live just a few blocks west of the absolute western part of Avondale. I've been at Belmont & Kostner for about 6 yrs. I take the 76 Diversey bus down to Logan Square very frequently, and during the summer my wife and I ride our bikes by your place to the farmers market. It's not the prettiest neighborhood looks-wise, but it's about as safe as most neighborhoods in the city.

Never been jumped or anything and we definitely walk around a lot even late at night. I will say this...if you're white and have a white collar job, prepared to feel lonely. Tough to fit in with your blue collar Hispanic neighbors. And you'll spend most of your time hanging out in other neighborhoods since none of your friends will ever come visit you...at least Logan Square is close.

Edit: wow, just re-read and you're pretty much at Diversey/Milwaukee? Jeez you're like 2 steps away from hipster central. Might sound weird but probably more dangerous of an area than if you were west like I was thinking. Tough guys prey on hipsters (see: muggings at the Spaulding blue line entrance).

Thank you for your info! Wow, you really live in west of the western part of Avondale. As you said, Avondale isn't the prettiest neighborhood in Chicago, but I thought the houses around the apartment were not gritty & dirty at all. It's a good sign. Hope I'll like the neighborhood because we decided to take the place(it's around on Wellington & Hamlin)

I'm neither a guy nor a Caucasian. But I'm sure I'll feel lonely because I've never lived in Hispanic neighborhood before. It's okay, I'll take Spanish class.

. . . or stabbed to death, or run down with a car, or if you're really lucky maybe your little girl and her best friend will get shot while playing on a school playground.

Avondale is far from the worst neighborhood, but please don't act like serious stuff doesn't happen there. In particular, Avondale is no stranger to gang violence.

Heh... useful, but not necessary. I'd say roughly 80% (or more) of the Northwest side Hispanic population speaks English at least well enough to carry on a basic conversation.

Hahahaha, actually it was an advice from one of my husband's relatives who lives in the area. But I'm not sure if we can get the apartment because we put in an application few days ago but haven't heard anything from the landlord yet.

Very interesting following your conversation as we too are considering a move to Chicago! Does anyone have any recommendations or complaints of Linne grade school? Is the area around it considered "east" and safer?
