Every time I see this thread pop up I get all warm and fuzzy feeling for the Northeast. It's almost Pavlovian.

Stop & Shop smelled just wonderful. They had amazing ice cream. My dad and I used to get ice cream cones for lunch during the summer. What an amazing store. I was just too young at the time to appreciate it.

Oh my gosh! I can remember their unique shopping bags. My gram and aunt shopped there and whenever they came to our home with those bags, I knew something special was about to happen. Among my earliest fond childhood memories are citrus (half-circle) jelly candies, violet mints, Swedish Peps and exotic produce from that store.
Honey Bear Farm stores were in Carson's at one time and a restaurant called the Highlander.

I'm confused. A thread about an old grocer in the Loop makes you think of the Northeast? How does that work? I'm not trying to be snarky--I'm just curious.

Stop N Shop is a large grocery chain in NY and other parts of the NE. They had great deals and Dominicks/Jewel don't really compete so seeing the name (even though it's describing a totally unrelated gourmet shop) makes me nostalgic.

TL;DR: I was off topic, I guess.

..is quite large in Mass, as it competes with Shaw's Supermarkets. Shaw's can be found in many New England states.
