My father was a manager for hillmans and stop and shop. Those were the days I was very young and can remember both stores. What a treat when my father came home with those chocolate covered strawberries. My father has been gone many years now but my sister has his hillmans name tag and a original paper bag and also a name tag and box from stop and shop.

I recall the nice juicy candied fruit they had a Xmas time for making fruitcakes, not of this chopped crap in the plastic containers, they had the real thing. Also they had fabulous marzipan. Marshall Fields had wonderful marzipan too. You could not get that stuff just anywhere.

Yes! Stop & Shop had a little dining area on a balcony that overlooked the candy counter. My mom and I used to stop for the chicken salad sandwich which was my first exposure to capers. I've loved them ever since. And the perfume candies, what a treat for special occasions! Also the apricot-stuffed candied prunes and marshmallow stuffed apricots! Great flash from the past, thank you!

Default History of Stop & Shop in Chicago

Hi,

For Stop & Shop fans, I highly recommend reading Ross Miller’s book, “Here’s The Deal” – The Buying and Selling of a Great American City.

I worked as a part-time employee at Stop & Shop for four and a half years working my way through college. I have fond memories as well. Most importantly, Stop & Shop has special meaning for me because this is where I first met my wife and we’ve currently been together forty-two years. Anyway, Ross Miller’s book talks about politics and architecture in Chicago, primarily Block 37, which is where Stop & Shop was located. There’s not much (three or four pages) on Stop & Shop and Hillman’s but it’s the closest I’ve found regarding any significant history and photos (black & white) of Stop & Shop. You can either buy this book or borrow it from your public library. Anyone interested in Stop & Shop/Hillman’s history should check it out.

I'm not sure if this post will go through...I am 50 years old and the Stop and Shop popped into my mind for some reason. I've been there when I lived in Chicago (and grew up there) before I moved out-of-state back in 1986. I googled the Stop and Shop and found this forum on it. I also loved the shop AND remember those perfumed candies! Well, I don't remember the name but after much googling, I think I might have found them. Check out Startup's Quality Candies :: Home (and see Magnolias).

If I'm not mistaken ... Hillman's and Stop and Shop were owned by the same family. Gardner Stern was the principal owner. Excellent stores. Responsible businesspersons. A win-win for Chicago. Way ahead of it's time ... Stop and Shop.

Stop & Shop was next door to Hillman's at 28 W Washington, my mother Geneva Ort was manager of Hillmans Candy. I use to go there late 40's, mother retired in 1950. My last visit was 1954 when I returned to see Mr. Remus CEO.
