I've never made a major move like this before and little concerned about safety and travel costs. Can someone give me any recommendations? Anyone making a similar move?

The cost of moving will depend on how much you're bringing with you and how you're getting it here. Professional movers. U-Haul. The cost will vary. As for safety, I don't see an issue. You won't be moving during inclement weather. No highway ice/snow to worry about. Melrose Park is primarily occupied by Italian-Americans and Mexicans and Mexican-Americans.

I moved here from San Francisco. You could look into having all your stuff brought out here in a moving pod (just call some companies in your area or on their websites and see if they go from OR to Chicago). It was pretty convenient because then we just flew in and got the pod delivered about five days later. Good if you don't have too much stuff.

Do the same thing
If you figure about 8 miles per gallon on a fully loaded U-Haul you won't be surprised at the cost of gas. The cost to rent a pod was $1000 in 2007.
If you hire a professional mover you do need to buy the insurance for full replacement. These people don't care about your furniture. They care about NOT paying to replace it. The one that handled mother's marble top tables crushed the tops and broke the legs and then and refused to pay because she didn't pay full insurance. Don't get caught in that dirty little long distance professional mover's secret.
U-Haul is no prize either. Caveat Emptor.
