The problem with mountains this time of year, Iam told is the probability of an avalanche. If you are only staying for a few days then do fly and rent a car. If you are moving then take a more southern route. It has many advantages.

There is no risk for avalanche on I-80, and I would assume it is the same for I-90. We're talking interstates, not back country mountain roads. Aside from some up and down here and there, I-80 is relatively flat... albeit at a high elevation (gets to 8000') Last winter when I was in Colorado, I did not see any avalanche warning signs on even I-70. Falling rocks sure, but nowhere for snow to accumulate and drop. Backroads, however, the avalanche warnings were all over the place.
