I guess that makes sense, since there are more people around at that stop. Bryn Mawr has gotten a lot better, and is turning into a nice commercial strip. There used to be a lot of drug sales activity going on at Wintrhop and Bryn Mawr, but the cops cleaned it out a few years ago with one of their crazy code word operations.... I'd probably try to live near there if I moved to Edgewater.

I lived in uptown a few years back for two years. I don't know who told you Uptown was safe and quiet. It is quiet on the side streets I suppose, but there are a lot of drug addicts and mentally ill people on the streets over there. Just because all of a sudden new condos are being built and apartments are turning into condos doesn't make the neighborhood safe-if anything I would think it would make it a bit more unsafe, because now the drug addicts see the wealthy yuppies moving in...I would be pissed too if they invaded my neighborhood.

I moved to Buena and Sheridan in southern Uptown about 5 weeks ago. I absolutely love it, and have been VERY suprised. After hearing all about it, I thought it would be a little crazy and dangerous, but where I am in Buena Park is absolutely awesome. VERY diverse group of people compared to living along Diversey, and it feels much more "at home" and neighborhoody than where I was in Lincoln Park/Lakeview. It's more residents going about their business and quiet tree lined sidestreets with awesome older buildings than the crowds of people who came up for the bars/resturants down south. I still love hanging out down south, but I feel more human and alive living in Uptown (Buena Park).
I know Buena Park is the nice area of the neighborhood, but I haven't had any problems up north of Montrose either. I think a lot of it is just perception and definitely luck.

I've lived just a few blocks east of you for more than three years, and I've had fewer problems with crime in Buena Park than in any other part of the city I've lived in. It's a great gem of affordability within blocks of Lakeview, and the transit convenience continues to surprise me. For instance, I walked a few blocks south to take the 151 bus to the zoo this past weekend, and the whole trip took 20 minutes! And the LSD express buses that go express at Irving Park Road can get me to the Mag Mile VERY quickly.
But I still think Broadway attracts a few too many skeevie types because of the liquor stores. But Broadway is actually worse to the south (by the Hotel Chateau in Lakeview) and to the north (in central Uptown).
So will you change your handle to "Chicago60613" now?

It is not the liquor stores that attract the "skeevy" people. There actually are not that many anymore on Broadway or near Broadway in Uptown. The government subsidized housing in Uptown, the Alderman Schiller supported homeless shelters, the crack houses, and the methadone clinics amongst other things are what make the core of Uptown crap.
No doubt Lake View has its problems with the Hotel Chateau and the Gill Park Co-op which I know firsthand about, but I would rather deal with those problems than the ones that plague Uptown in about a half mile radius in each direction from Broadway and Wilson.

I will be moving from the 5600 block of north Kenmore in July of 09 when my lease is up to the 4400 block of north Sheridan, just south of Wilson and North of Montrose and spitting distance to Broadway. I liked the area, a bit ruff on the edges but I wasn't raised with wealth and riches so having all the trendy (to some people they are trendy, to others - just over priced crap is an expensive "name") shops so I feel comfortable and have no desire to try and support gentrification in the neighborhood. Live and let live.

Can I ask you why you are moving? How would you have a place set up a year in advance?

Sure, you can ask. I like the area I a m in now, very happy actually, and would rather be here than in Lakeview or Lincoln Park, just not my flavor, and I just like the area: Green Mill, Uptown Bikes, my barber is there - Leland & Ken more, and I will save about $800.00 - $1,000.00 a year in this place. It's a big building so I know I will get a place at that ti me. It is through the sa me Real Estate Co. that owns the building I a m in now. So meti mes co ming fro m Chicago/State I a m ready to ju mp in bed when I get to Wilson so.... that is why, no other reasons really.

Can I ask how much you are paying now and for what size place?
I dont see how living near Sheridan and Montrose is going to cut your commute time much really.
