If people have watched the news recently, you'd notice the city wide violence that erupted overnight yesterday.

One incident that has me sort of shocked is the shooting of a 19 year old near Devon and Oakley in the West Ridge neighborhood. The kid was shot in the head, and is in critical condition at St Francis hospital. I used to live in the area (Artesian and Rosemont) until about 11 years ago, when I had to move to Dallas for work. The area was always nice, but after last night's violence, I called up my brother who still lives in the area. He actually lives right near where the shooting happened, and he says the area keeps getting more and more gang infested by the day. What is going on over there?

Didn't you just answer your own question?

When the underclass gets priced out of Wicker Park, then Bucktown, then Logan Square, then parts of Humboldt Park, and now Avondale, where do you think they go?

Is this actually happening? Why not go to even cheaper neighborhoods?

Puzzling and depressing. I used to attend a writers' group in West Ridge. It was a solid middle-class area with lots of attractive houses and streets, and kind of a sleepy "traditional suburb" feel.

I doubt the "underclass priced out" explanation. I don't think the area is cheap enough for that, and it always looked like the kind of place where people looked out for each other and took care of their property. That said, I don't have an explanation of my own.

Because the even cheaper neighborhoods tend to already have well-established gangs. It's easier to set up shop in a neighborhood where there won't be much pushback.

For what it's worth, West Rogers Park didn't seem particularly nice 11 years ago either. Not that it was a hellhole then nor is it now, but contrary to your brother's assertion it doesn't seem like the fundamental character of the neighborhood has changed that much. But then, I don't live there so maybe your brother knows better.

Its true that some people are being priced out of other neighborhoods,
included "east" or just "regular" Rogers Park (the eastern portion) little by little. Clark and Ashland adjacent is more problematic now, but still improving.
Gang loitering is not being tolerated on Morse. Its over. You can see
better coverage at Craigs new blog.

Now in Rogers Park.

West Ridge is MORE patchy than regular Rogers Park,
and Devon adjacent tends not to such a great area, more apts for sure.
Indian Boundary Park is a nicer area.

Having owned a condo on Hoyne S of Devon, I agree West RIDGE wasn't particulary nice 11 years ago, indeed. Nor has it been "middle class" suburban ish for decades. However, this is not true of West ROGERS PARK, (W of California N of Pratt to Howard.) It remains pretty nice.

This shooting does not represent some big change in West RIDGE. It has been seedy for years and did not benefit much from the condo conversion boom of the last decade.
