The Onion Ceases Distribution In D.C., Philadelphia

Quote:
Bad news for parody-lovers: the print edition of The Onion has ceased distribution in Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia, the company confirmed to BuzzFeed.

"The business model we had set up in these places didn't wield the results we were looking for, which was sustainability," said spokeswoman Anne Finn.

Funny paper; sounds like it's moving back closer to its Madison, WI roots. Some of the staffers seem wedded to NYC, though...happens in every relocation....

I doubt they'll struggle significantly to find snarky writers in Chicagoland.

DC is far too devoid of sarcasm and good humor.

I thought the Onion lost a certain rather unique sensibility when it went to New York, you know, things like "Man listening to Highway to Hell is really on parkway to Waukegan".

Sad but true (I speak from experience). There are a very few wonderfully snarky folks there but they are a small minority.

Hell, they could scoop up half the posters in the Chicago forum here and they'd be set.

I only ever saw the Onion on-line. Does it really matter if they stop publishing on paper?

Yes it does. You always have to have some print. Personally I dont think I would read the onion on-line.

Some people think we have advanced alot, we have to some degree. Now we are forced to look on our phones for movies times because for the most part THE READER has stopped listing showtimes. So when I was younger I just had to look for a Reader and be able to spontaneously see some movie if I wanted to, now i would be FORCED to use a smart phone to look it up. Progress? Sortof, just different. Can still look up restaurants in the Reader. Its nice to NOT have to use a computer for EVERYTHING.
Personally I dont like reading computers, except for occasional articles/blogs/discussions.

I used to love the old references to bars in Milwaukee, or quips from small Midwestern towns. It really did give the paper some local character, while still being funny.

I'm sure that there's quite a bit of available talent in both Madison and Chicago to staff the paper. You certainly don't have to be in NYC to be "national", and funny..
