Is there any actual data on how good Chicago's schools really are?
Quality of the students is not the same as the quality of the school. There have been studies in Chicago that showed students from "bad schools" did no better after they were transferred to "good schools".
One of the biggest myths in America is with urban vs suburban school quality.

I noticed your first post was from Sep 15 but hopefully I could be of some help. There are areas within 20 minutes that offer rents within your range. Try the areas of Portage Park or Jefferson Park. These areas have tons of apartments in your price range.(Mostly 2 beds. in 2 or 3 flats.) There are also surprisingly very good elementery schools in these areas. Parent involvement is key to keeping these schools in the upper tier of The Chicago Public Schools and there is much of that in these areas.
Good Luck, Jimbo

Humboldt Park
When I left Chicago a few years ago, this area was still gentrifying and up and coming. Now that Wicker Park is now yuppieville, how safe would it be to pay 200 dollars a square foot for a condo here? What is the safety profile of this area now? I was driving around it last fall and it seemed pretty ok, and I didn't see many of the Hispanic thug looking guys I remember from years past. Any help for this Chicagoan turned southerner?

Depends on what you mean by "Humboldt Park." If you mean "the part that hugs Bucktown/Wicker Park and is east of the actual park" then it's doing better than it was 10 years ago. But the polished charm falls off very rapidly once you get west of the park, and I doubt that will change any time soon.

On saturdays we play softball at humboldt park.
We just ask random people who are there if they wanna play.
So if anyone is down, just come.
