Graffiti is a crime... but there are a few people who deserve to showcase their spray painting somewhere. 12 29.27%
Graffiti is a crime, but a part of (mostly) city life. There isn't much we can do about it without infringing on other people's rights. 0 0%
Graffiti has it's place, and can be awesome... But it doesn't have to go away completely. It just needs to show some respect for others. 11 26.83%

I lot of people do it BECAUSE it is a crime. Some people still have that urge, like teenagers needing to rebel... They think they are sticking it to the man, but it always ends up being some lower than minimum wage grandmother minority that gets the job of cleaning it up.

Defacing private property is as wrong as the reason, and is as wrong as the person who defaces. It is not a tag; it is a crime. It is defacing property you DO NOT own. Tag is not artistic; it is not symbolic: it is a crime. Your tag on my garage is no different than if I tag on your arm with a knife or tattoo. We've both been violated, and we are both guilty of a criminal act.

Maybe if the gangbangers had their head and face permanently tattooed with the initials of the persons they violated it would settle the crime down. It could be a walking advertisement to avoid crime. It wouldn't look too bad in prison but I don't know how an employer would feel about facial tattoos.

Yeah I do not think having a program would stop this because they are not doing it for art they are doing it for other reasons. Its not art its ugly. Its different than street murals and stuff. There is no talent any of us could do it.

I hate it. Whenever I go to European cities where they accept it as part of the "youth expressing themselves" I shake my head. It is dirty and defaces property. Now if they want to set up certain areas for taggers to express themselves, I'm OK with that. Otherwise it's destroying/defacing property!

I don't understand how anyone could disagree with this.

I wish Chicago would set up designated areas for graffiti. The problem is, unfortunately, I don't think it would stop graffiti from happening anywhere else.

I know a guy who owns a building in Old Town, it has a garage off the alley. He's an artist and likes graffiti - likes it to the extent that he encourages anyone with paint to express themselves on his garage. But every 6 months or so, when (presumably) a neighbor who doesn't like graffiti calls 311 - graffiti blasters from the city come by and clean it. It's his damn property, he wants it, yet they continue to erase it against his wishes. He just gets the taggers to graffiti it again. It's a cycle.

Since when was life, and all the choices that go along with it, an "all or none" proposition?

I personally don't care if someone has "a message" and can't figure out any other way to share it with others; that does not give them any right to deface property that isn't theirs. I don't understand why someone can't paint their art on a board or on their own property. That said, I think that when graffiti is done artfully it's alright to look at. I'm still not a huge fan but I can deal with it.

I think if someone has a compelling message that they just desperately need to get out they should find a way to do it that doesn't deface the property of others. Why not think outside of the box and get permission first?
Because it ain't art -- your question is remarkably similar to "I don't understand why a rapist can't just talk to a woman, charm her, and take her home."

Ha, that's awesome. It's probably his stuffy neighbors calling.

After seeing this thread, I think it might be kind of cool to have a mural on my garage.

Think my neighbors would mind this on the garage? http://www.thedirtfloor.com/wp-conte...rest-bbq-7.jpg
