Working and doing business in California -- yes people are way more laid back, indirect, don't want to offend. In Chicago you state your mind at work, argue, and things get done (usually, haha...something like that). I have noticed I come across as very direct in California while in Chicago I am one of the shy ones.

However, I have found outward materialism more rampant in Chicago. I actually feel the need to dress down, not do my hair/make up etc in Sacramento or San Francisco cause they think we are way to uptight about that stuff out here in the east (we are all east). Its not that people are not materialistic, I'm sure they are in some cases....but I felt the need to play everything down was much more important when trying to fit in. When I came back to Chicago I felt suddenly much more aware of the imperfections in my car.

Add to this our cold climate, and everything is indoors anyway-- nothing here is out in the open, either in cultural expression or social activity. You'll have to *gasp* learn how to be subtle
I think in SF it is a lot of shock value. Like how much can a tourist take before they drop their jaw? I love it. I love the shock value.

Id disagree. Chicago has wonderful restaurants (and the nicest one in the country according to some magazines), and alot more of them. As for the weather, San Fran has milder winters, but cool summers, which Id rather have warmer summers.

I almost passed out at the double door during summer. It's not the warmth baby, it's your humidity that kills.

No doubt it can get really steamy at times, but it doesnt last long. The rest of the summer is glorious. San Fran's summers are chilly in my book, its usually in the upper 60s and lower-to-mid 70s, too cold to swim, etc. It is quite sunny there year round, and the humidity is low, but thats about it. If you want good weather, head south to the L.A. area.

I'd say about 95% of people would agree with the poster you're disagreeing with. San Francisco has better weather, period. I don't know of a single person who thinks Chicago's weather is an asset.

As far as food, both have great restaurants, but you're right that Chicago probably has more high quality restaurants. This is primarily due to the sheer size of Chicago compared to San Francisco. I would argue that San Francisco has much better ethnic/cheap food.

Please please please let's not get into another "my weather is better than your weather" bickerfest. Ever so tiresome, they are.

Sorry chap, San Fran's summers are rather chilly. Alot of people, myself included, prefer a warm summer. I was in San Fran back in July of 2001 and had to buy a light jacket to wear the 3 days I was there. The rest of the year San Fran experiences mild temps, far milder than Chicago's no doubt. I just dont like their summers all that much.

Sorry, Drover.

San Fran is more beautiful than Chicago and has more density and much better weather year round but Chicago gives you everything you want and need in a big city. It has way more soul. I don't want to offend anyone but SF seems fake at times.
