3 hours is substantial. This time of year, you can often get to snow (and definitely get to fairly hard winter) in 3 hours from Atlanta, GA or Columbia, SC.

If anyone from chicago or anywhere felt like knowing, my friend just came back from vacation there and he says the people there are much more friendly than the people here in the bay area.

NO, it took 2 hours to that picture. 3 hours to Reno/Lake Tahoe. I love chicago but there are NO mountains.

Thats good. Mountains are a pain in the arse, although beautiful. There are only 2 things I can think of that would make mountains in Chicago worthwhile: skiing and stopping sprawl.

Think of what Chicago would look like with the lake on one side and mountains on the other. If I ever win the lotto, and buy myself the ability to be God, this will be accomplished within the first hundred hours of my reign.

Back to my statement, though, within less than TWO hours of Charlotte, NC, for example, you can also get mountains, snow, and "real" winter. Just sayin'. Proximity to winter isn't terribly hard to find in a lot of the country. |

On the other hand, for those of us who like to drive -- and not just in the sense of "point the snout of the car in some direction and step on the gas pedal" but to really, truly drive -- imagine how nice it would be to actually have some curves and switchbacks to drive on.

There's one tiny little stretch on Sheridan in the north burbs that almost makes me feel like I'm back in Western NC.... |
