to get more responses, I would re-post this as a seperate thread. But, I think the overall response would be that it depends on what you are looking for and what you want to do.
In Chicago, there is Loyola, Depaul, Northwestern (right outside the border), UIC, U of Chicago...just to name a few.

Yes, DePaul, Loyola, DePaul, Northwestern, University of Chicago and UIC are the larger universities in the area. Aside from these, there are numerous smaller private schools. You may want to extensively research Northwestern and University of Chicago.

Check out Loyola. Went there for a year, but I ended up transferring back to Ball State in Indiana for financial reasons. It was great. Best campus, hands down. Its Jesuit, don't know if you'd mind that, but if you can afford it, I would definitely recommend it.

Then DePaul wouldn't fit either. Northwestern would be a great choice, though I'm not well versed on their studies except for friends who studied fine arts, music and the Kellogg MBA School. Northwestern is private, however it kind of straddles between public/private with its Big Ten inclusion. Check out the University of Chicago.

That's quite a diverse list. Well, UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago) has dental and pharmacy schools, and Loyola also has a dental school. Northwestern and University of Chicago have top ranked business schools. UIC has a very well regarded urban planning college.

I dont know what one expects for a lake around a major city. Its beautiful for what it is - A huge lake around a huge CITY,,no palm tree kind of atmosphere, delightful for boating, picnics, walks etc ,but for a real beach? Warren Sand dunes ,Michigan.About an hour or less from the city and worth the drive
