I am looking for a single-family home on the south side of chicago. I am looking for a house in the $200,000-300,000 range. Safety is my number one concern. I know Beverley and morgan park are pretty nice but I would like some more options. thanks!

Unfortunately, a lot of the traditionally middle class neighborhoods on the south side like Chatham have been trending badly lately. However, I think Garfield Ridge/ Clearing by Midway airport are still fine, and in that price range. Bridgeport is also safe, but may be out of your price range.

Didn't you say you grew up in Back of the Yards? I imagine you know the city better than most of the posters... unless you moved to Arizona 50 years ago, etc., and are coming back.

The only neighborhood that jumps out at me is Bridgeport. I don't think a single family home at $300K would be out of your range at all in Bridgeport east of Halsted, which is the more desirable section. Beyond that I admit my knowledge is limited but you are looking at kinds of patchwork here and there that potentially are going to go south, maybe extremely so, in the next decade. Even Bridgeport may be in that boat, although the hipsters are starting to move in in droves, which is generally a very good thing.

Personally I'd stay clear of Bridgeport, especially the eastern portion. There been more squad cars patrolling the area within the past year. As Jaye suggested, although I may be biased, Garfield Ridge is a good neighborhood. Mainly because a majority of city workers: police, firefighter, and paramedic residing in this area. There've been plentiful of foreclosed houses that value around $75,000 to $150,000, most which are in moderate shape but can use a tiny bit of refurnishing to your liking. There's a realtor (Home Sales Realty, Inc.) on 60th and Pulaski that can provide free list of homes within the West Elsdon and West Lawn neighborhoods.

Really? You would avoid Bridgeport east of Halsted? There have been 12 murders in Bridgeport since 2007; 11 of them have taken place west of Halsted.

I've always understood that the vast majority of gang activity is west of Halsted.

I am not super familiar with the area but Bridgeport east of Halsted has always struck me as a pretty nice neighborhood by and large.

In terms of safety, it's moderate, but I was generally referring in terms of friendliness and community.
