River North
I heard River North is a nice diverse, safe neighborhood. Is that true?

Quite nice. Relatively safe. Not very diverse.
Lots of design lofts and art galleries. What's left of Cabrini is to the north, and there are a couple of other spotty areas, but most of the area is quite upscale.

^ but at the same time that area is changing almost daily. At one point the Cabrini Green Housing Projects had over 15,000 people. Today is has around 4,000 and shrinking rapidly.
They've torn down most of the dozens of high-rises in the development, and almost everything remaining is abandoned and boarded up. It's been an amazing change in just the 6 years I've been in Chicago. It looks like they're in the process of tearing down one of the red buildings, have 2 more boarded up, and only 1 that I can tell still has people in it. Most of the white buidings are gone now as well, only 3 remain. All are suppose to be gone very soon. This will leave the neighborhood very expensive, and more than likely very white.

And it's only sketchy north of Chicago Avenue if you are far west as Orleans street. Otherwise you'll find yourself in the Gold Coast or Old Town, which are very very fancy expensive areas north of Chicago Avenue!
