Do you get it? Or do you care enough to come back and say why all the South and West sides are avoidable.

I will be waiting with giddy anticipation.

Hell... Even I live on the Northwest Side and I know the West and South aren't "Fallout" wastelands (if you know the video game).

Good call. I vaguely remember us C-D folks railing on that place a few years ago. It's not even great when you're drunk. And if you're in Lincoln Park getting hot dogs, you're probably drunk.

They will valet your car on the tow lot at 103rd and Doty but they do it with a fork lift.

The blog and this thread are kind of preppie and have a vague ill-manner included. I expected to see the word 'ick' posted any minute.

If you use a public bathroom in a public building, I guess you cannot expect it to be the Ritz Carlton. Crowded sidewalks? This happens to be the big city -- what was expected? I can assure you that the Howard Red Line station is now far less raffish than it was in past years. You don't want to circle at O'Hare? I suggest use of the cellphone lot.

It seems that the thread is less 'places to avoid' than 'things which irk me'.

What places do I avoid? The north side.

Thank you all. I was at the Thompson Center yesterday to renew my drivers licence and avoided the restrooms there because of this thread. Really was suprised at how dirty in general the whole place seemed to be.

I would avoid any expressway during rush hour if you can. The womans bathroom at Ogilvie station is crowded and often has a line during rush hour. You can duck into the Corner bakery bathroom and its much more pleasant and less travelled. If you order a double cheeseburger at McD it costs more and has an extra slice of cheese than a McDouble which is basically two meat patties and one slice of cheese and is on the dollar menu.

Self-fulfilling prophecy? You were the first person to bring "ick" into the discussion.

How is it preppie to give advice on places to avoid? Should I have said that the Thompson Center bathrooms were a "must-do" on anyone's list who is in Chicago? And for the Skyway McD's as well?

I've been in numerous public bathrooms that don't have anywhere near the amount of problems the one in the Thompson Center does. And it's puzzling to me because it is such a used building, and right in the thick of the Loop. I would have thought a little more effort would have been put into keeping the facilities from looking like a scene in a "Saw" movie. Every single Interstate rest stop I have been in is cleaner and better maintained than the restrooms in the Thompson Center.

And for the sidewalks, well... look no further than the word itself: sidewalk. It's not a sidestand, sidegawk, sidetext, or sidephotoshoot. If people want to do that, the least they can do is move off to one side or the other to allow other people who are actually, you know, walking to use the sidewalk. Other sidewalks around Michigan Avenue don't have that problem, so the ones on the Mag Mile can be avoided.

Long lines at a DMV "irk" me. Slow drivers "irk" me.

The potential CSI scene that resides at the Thompson Center is also "irking", but avoidable. Why go through an "irking" when much better options are readily available?

And it's not like the Skyway McD's is the only one in Chicago. Granted it is the only one in the middle of a highway, but it can be avoided.

For the record: A double cheeseburger (not McDouble) used to be a dollar, at least in Indiana. That's why I added it to this list. At the time I could get one for a dollar, but getting one on the Skyway cost something like $2.10, and then tax was added on. I haven't been to the Skyway McD's for at least three years. One experience with the (literal) highway robbery (extortion?) was enough for me to avoid it for the rest of my days.

This could just be a mistake.

Maybe you meant "place", but your finger slipped.
Maybe the concept of plurals slipped your brain at the time.
Maybe you meant to say "North Sides"

But, I read the above and expect to see more than one (1) thing listed as "places" to avoid.

Furthermore, why do you avoid the Northside? I believe everyone else mentioned why they avoid the areas/places mentioned. But you just leave me guessing as to why you avoid the Northside.

Is it because of the traffic?
Is it because you are such a die-hard Sox fan you can't bring yourself to cross Madison?
Is it because it's too close to Wisconsin?
Is it because you have a phobia that prevents you from traversing North of a certain latitude?
Is it because there are less shootings?
Is it because you can't leave the side of town that the Daley's call home?

I'm curious. Please elaborate.

Because it's popular with former hayshakers who call the Secretary of State's office the "DMV"?
