Default should I take 3rd shift job in Chicago

my current job is in Iowa, pay less, has 1st shift 5 days a week, but there is often overtime, sometimes friday evenings, saturdays, always Sundays after 2:00am , and every 4-6 weeks, ure on on-call shift to answer phones for for 7 straight nights until rotation when you try to sleep. U work all the time! Its energy draining.

New job, pays more, is somewhat better, learn more, get to live in Chicagoland and my family but its shift not so good because its 3rd. No overtime, no on-call, no irregular schedules.

I would work Fri, Sat 11-pm-12:30p (Sat, Sun) + Sun 8:00pm-9:30pm (1.5h). The rest days I would have off.

Is it doable? I can't imagine being nocturnal all days I dont work just to try to keep regular sleep pattern.

But currently at my work, I often lack sleep , am tired and has had effect on my health. I am technical support so my work would be at desk.

I mean, it's possible. People do it all the time, especially at hospitals. Did you say you have family like wife and/or kids or did you mean you have relatives in town? Am I reading right that it's only 3 days/week? Still 40 hours it looks like.

Even if you want to do it, you have to consider what you'd be paid to see what kind of a lifestyle you can afford here, where your job would be in the area, etc. I went to school in Iowa and the cost of living is much cheaper overall. You dont' have to make a lot of money to live here or anything for sure, but you should be aware of what you'll be paid, how much debt you have if any, etc..

The schedule itself is done by millions of people.

Money is what you should be worried about.
You only work two days?

debt to income ratio would definitely decrease. Although it probably would not be good idea to live with parents (never really is but I like many others do stay for few years after college to pay off student loans).

What I am worrying is health, diet, sleep etc. I less care about quality of life, it would definitely improve since I would be back on my familiar land, closer to friends, family and move out from Iowa!. Maybe its possible they could let me switch if I want to 2nd shift after I do my 3rd shift "debt" 6 months later. U always gotta start somewhere at bottom to move up. Just I hope I won't be stuck in that shift for years.

100% agree. It looks like 3 days, but 13.5 hour shifts each day...which comes out to 40.5 hours, but if you have an hour break each day, then it would be 37.5 hours (some people pay for breaks while others don't).

Before you move to Chicago do go through the threads. If you work downtown you will consider mass transit pass, or parking. - which can cost $20 and up per day. It's over $100 for new plates and a new license. Car and renter insurance is higher too. You need to buy stickers to park where you live plus from the City to park in the city. Gasoline, utilities, and rent will probably be higher too. $38K for a family is not enough dough.

Okay, so you have family in the area. Gotcha. I thought you meant you had a wife and/or kids.

You should still be worrying about money even if you don't care about your quality of life. You still need to eat, get to work (i guess you could get lucky and live within walking distance to work if it's in a safe area). If you made $10/hour or let's say $1600 pretax per month (i made that figure up..i have no idea what you'll make), then well this is Chicago so even a cheap $600/month apartment with other required payments..things could get a little tight for the things you need to do like buy food but hey, it's totally possible obviously. In a situation like that, better to live with roommates.

it woud be far away from loop, congested highways and during non-rush hours. parking I would have covered (free). Plates would be actually cheaper in Illinois than Iowa, the insurance would double but thats it. Food is more expensive in IA actually so grocery costs would be about 30% cheaper.

It depends on where you live in Chicago actually. I lived in Iowa for 5 years as recently as a handful of years ago, and food is more expensive in Chicago itself on average. Not everywhere is, but in my experience....more expensive here on average. It really depends on what neighborhood you're in and stuff. You should come to the grocery stores I go to and then get back to me thinking Iowa is more expensive.

pay would be decent like for my level of experience. Would start at >$55k, drive from home would be 40 minutes or less. No pay for rent since I'd stay with parents (unless they start to drive me insane, no their fault but because I would work 3rd shift on weekends). Obviously my full-time night shift would be only 26 hours.

I see they are pluses and minuses to what I have consider. On bad side, I would be working long nights, on bright side, would never have to take day off or leave early at work to get personal things taken care of like doctor visits, etc.
