I moved here right after they completed it, but know it was huge. Was the project pretty major and what effects did it have on traffic? How long did it take? What did everyone think of it? Is it a lot better now?

The construction of the Dan Ryan was horrible for the people living in its planned path and ideally great for drivers, though some say that creating a highway encouraged automobile use and worsened traffic in the long run.

Are we talking about the initial construction of the Ryan or the rebuild a few years ago?

It wasn't too bad for most people because I'm pretty sure they diverted all trucks onto Halstead street and that had to be terrible for the people in the neighborhoods.

Sure would be interesting to hear comments about the original build of the Dan Ryan.

Number of homes displaced and what streets were re aligned or moved etc..

How long the project lasted.

IIRC they did the locals and the express lanes separately, so while there was a substantial reduction in capacity, you still generally had at least 3 or 4 lanes in each direction. It still sucked for Southside commuters though.

Yes indeed it did suck,
I remember thinking once the road was complete there would be no more traffic snarls...

Not sure how long it took but i was thinking 2 or three years.

That clearly did not happen.

I think they added another lane of cross-section in each direction, which is a pretty big improvement. The thing is 12+ lanes wide for most of its length. It's hard to ask for more from 26th to 69th St.

Does the thing still jam? YEAH. But you look at where it jams: Northbound at the north end all the time, from the Circle down to Roosevelt, Cermak or 35th depending on when. And southbound during the evening rush over most of its length, at which time the north end of the Bishop Ford and I-57 also jam. To me, this means the bottlenecks are actually at either end of the Ryan, and it is just backing up onto the main part.

And the north end is too small; most northbound people are going to the Circle, but you have 14 lanes at 31st St, and I think only six lanes that go through past the Stevenson. That I-55-to-Circle part is all elevated and must have been several times more expensive to add lanes as further south. And then the Circle Interchange itself is at like double its design capacity and is an even bigger bottleneck.

So I think they did a good job on the Ryan reconstruction, particularly 26th St and south, with plenty of capacity over most of its length. And when they finally fix the Circle (and maybe some other smaller projects) it will really pay off.

I've always heard that this was what destroyed (or at least greatly reduced) Little Italy.
