There will be a Chicago Bernie Goetz if this keeps up and I won't be the least bit upset.
This I 100% agree with. What will then be interesting is how the States Atty will handle this. Depending upon circumstances will there be prosecution or not. I'm personally sick of all this "if you are confronted be a scared squirrel and hand over all your possessions" crap. The latest press release from I believe the new Children's Hospital was just pathetic. I understand they have to put things in their statement for liability. But does it really need to be made public to hand over your items the offender demands, be non confrontational and just be a good witness. Sure let's make it even more ingrained that you are prey to the predator. Obviously this State needs CCW. But let's hope these idiots try to mug a few off duty cops and get shot. CPD needs to start doing more plain clothes stings of cops walking around looking like victims and the table gets turned.
I said no such thing. Kids born in the 80s who didn't get educated are now in their 30's working minimum wage jobs with no way out because they can't read directions on medicine, make change for a buck, or follow a map. This is not the same as dealing drugs because they want a $100 pair of running shoes or a fast buck.

People can't be this naive to believe that or can they? The problem is not a lack of the proper education and indoctrination. The problem is that the "system" gives fundamentally false promises of "upward mobility" to everybody who do this and that right, everybody who's not "upwardly mobile" is welcome to blame himself. In other words, pure and unashamed circular logic in its simplest form is used to control masses. Education (or lack of it) is skillfully being used to cool down unrealistic expectations and to direct blame away from the hierarchical "system" dispensing fundamentally false promises.
Civilizations of status know no existential meanings other than boosting individual status using all means necessary. You don't give ganbangers their dues. They are not stupid, actually they are smart enough to see through falsehood of the circular logic (they may lack proper vocabulary and grammar to express their knowledge though), but they know rather well that following a realistic life path of a generic wage slave residing in their neighborhoods would buy them no respect/status, little money, rotten teeth, crushing feeling of defeat and self-loathing, and bunch of chronic deseases on top of that as a reward. That's not the image of good life that was imbedded in their brains by the very same "system" that dispenses fundamentally false promises. They would rather risk the most precious asset they've got (their life) to have a miniscule shot on higher status (as seen on TV).
The hierarchical "system" needs low status dispensable units to keep it running and to provide for those on the higher perches. At the same time it needs to control all those lower status units. It does that by using a carrot of "opportunity" to join upper classes (if you play your card right). For a carrot of "opportunity" to be appealing "the system" unleashes all its propaganda and mass cult arsenals to put down low status social classes and lines of work they do in order to isolate and shame the majority into obedience (it's all your fault for being there after all). The social control scheme is very simple and plainly obvious (to every one except worshipers and beneficiaries of "education"), yet many folks in the middle are scratching their heads in disbelief that some low status units would prefer high risk crime life to a generic wage slave drudgery and self-blame, or that some people would rather risk their lives instead of cherishing sacred middle class values of self-adjustment and rat race.
It's not strictly Chicagoan or American "phenomenon", Europe (even Eastern Europe ) experiences something similar. Younger generations are raised by subtle propaganda and mass cult delivering strictly selected images of "good life", behavioral stereotypes, aspirations, etc.. Then your average youngster looks around and see that hard "honest" work would never buy all those images of good life as seen on TV. Mismatch of aspirations and reality. Social steam is building up. Bolder alpha youngsters put their life on the line in order to avoid low status life paths (i.e. backbone of hierarchical societies) using all means necessary. Less gutsier ones just don't give a dime and are compelled to do things by fear and survival instincts. I don't see how more of "education" can resolve anything. Little reminder, most, actually ALL the revolutions/social movements, etc. in the past 200 years history were masterminded and lead by over-educated and underemployed. "The system" utilizing formal education as a social control tool is playing with fire, literally.
I was in Boystown the other night. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Is there something happening there?
I lived near Boystown all last summer and spent many weekends with friends shopping and hitting up bars and don't recall these roving gangs of black hooligans that only SmartGXL seems to have seen. I'm a black chick in Lakeview- I'd like to think that when I see large groups of people of my skin complexion, especially guys, hanging around a neighborhood notoriously lacking in people like us, I'd notice.
And I STILL don't get the correlation between the Center which is geared towards the under-served gay population and the so-called roving blacks thugs harassing the masses of Lakeview. Never noticed any drama around there when I pop into that Whole Foods, well, other than some guys' lover's spat near corner.
Back to the original post, yeah, I do always try to read between the lines and learn that the victims are rarely innocent victims. Even the recent shooting in Uptown where a 13-14 year old got shot had me wondering what gang he was a part of. Hate to jump to such conclusions, but if you're just sitting in your car or hanging out on the corner at 2-4am in an area you know to be gang infested, 9 times out of 10, I'm going to think something suspicious is going on. I've lived in some rough areas in Chicago (no where too crazy though I'm sure certain people here would have run shrieking back to the north side) and even when I worked late nights, I knew well enough to hustle back home before things really got wild.
NYC, LA and Chicago get the media spotlights because these are the 3 largest cities in America. and unusual events in these cities get national media attention. It is a vicious cycle.
As an aside I found an unusual reality channel on satellite that focuses on police departments. If you like your vehicle, do not drive drunk in Naperville and get caught. The lady cops do an excellent job; the fun is over. I see various broad based shows from LA to NYC with one theme: crime control and getting the bad guys off the street and breaking up gangs. These same teams with massive firepower and concentrated resources seem to get it right the first time: SWAT, ICE, US Marshall, and sometimes the Sheriff is coordinated with local police. The point is this. If Chicago is not doing it right, or if they need help -- it is a phone call away.
In 2010, there were about 34.3 births per 1,000 teenagers--or about one birth for every 29 teen girls--aged 15-19, a 44-percent decline from 1991 numbers and 64 percent lower than in 1957. Fewer babies were born to teenagers in 2010 than in any year since the peak of World War II. Laura Lindberg, of the Guttmacher Institute, which studies reproductive health, says better sex education and more widespread contraceptive use have contributed to the decline.

Black and Hispanic teens are still having children at the greatest rate, but are quickly closing the gap between other groups. The number of black teens having children declined from 1-in-16 in 2007 to 1-in-20 in 2010, while the Hispanic birth rate declined from 1-in-13 to 1-in-18 over the same period. Just 1-in-100 Asian teens and 1-in-43 white teens gave birth in 2010.
On a state-by-state basis, there is a wide gap in the number of births--the south has many more births per 1,000 teen females than New England.
More than 1-in-20 teens had a child in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico and Mississippi. In Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, that number was less than 1-in-50. The birth rate is higher in typically more socially conservative states where it may be harder to obtain hormonal birth control, but Linberg says economics and educational attainment plays a role in those states as well.
The problem in the black community with teen pregnancy is that it has been happening over multiple generations in some cases. So you have multiple generations in families where they didn't finish school and don't value education.
You also don't have the complete breakdown of the family structure in the other communities like you have seen in the black community.
I say that we offer cold, hard cash in the ghetto in exchange for vasectomies.
Not a bad idea.
