Average highs:

June: 80 degrees
July: 84 degrees
August: 83 degrees
September: 76 degrees

Heat waves come and it gets into the 90's, and it's usually a seasonal thing (colder all summer, warmer all summer), but it's still not "normal".

You have more of a chance of being hit by a car crossing a street at a red light than being mugged in most places in this city.

a place where Winter actually feels like Winter.
Yeah, it feels like winter here, but not terrible compared to other places. If you want even colder and possibly more snow.. move to Iowa, Minnesota, the Dakotas, Montana, Wyoming, or Alaska

100 is almost unheard of here, though, while 70s is fairly common. The usual upper end of the range is low 90's. The high 90's we had a few weeks ago were among the hottest temps I've experienced in Chicago in 7 years. There haven't been "100s" (i.e. actually over 100 for more than a minute or two) since the heat wave of 1995, to the best of my knowledge.

I'm about 15 miles from the lake and there is a nice, refreshing lake breeze today blowing through the open windows on the east side of the house. Yes it can get hot and humid, but after a few days our Canadian friends send us more cool, fresh Canadian air. I just wish they would turn it off in the winter! If you want it even cooler, look into Milwaukee, Green Bay, Muskegon, Traverse City or areas along the Great Lakes farther north of Chicago.

Summers are quite pleasant, especially the closer to the lake you are. Really hot spells usually don't last very long.

Or anywhere else in the lower Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, South, or Southwest, IMO.

Summers here are very nice. Yes, there are some days which are just horrible, more so in July and August, by they are not that common and pretty spread out. You might get like two days of hell followed by two weeks of heaven.

Forget the winters, how bad are the summers?

Well, it's really important to remember than while our winters are always below 0° (0° is actually considered balmy; we celebrate by going coatless) and ten feet of snow with wind chills in the triple digits and our summers are virtually 100°+ with 100% humidity every day, it is our springs and falls you really have to beware of.

I can't describe it but it is blood curdling. You see, in the in-between seasons, we have air that is actually at a boiling point mixing with frigid air that would make your fingers snap off. Often these play off of each other in horrid ways where you will both freeze and boil to death at the same time. This has been known to happen at both our St. Patrick's Day and Columbus Day parades.

It's amazing that anyone actually lives here.

When people say Chicago is horrible in the winter, I always respond with "Really? Because 9 million people seem to deal just fine with it......."
