I think a lot of it is people who don't walk for a living, going places or to the store, work, etc. There's no urgency or drive to make them walk quickly to accomplish something. Tourists in Chicago will be walking side by side down the sidewalk at rush hour and then just slow to a crawl and finally a stop as they stand there staring off into space. Then they get put off when you slam by them actually trying to go somewhere. "That was rude!". Yes, it's also rude when you drive down the highway and just stop in your lane for no reason at all.
Relax, they are on vacation. Why should they be running next to you to get to places.

These are things you normally do in Chicago just to survive. We don't put up with people who dilly-dally.

The airports were the biggest change for me. I walked around in the airport out here, and people were walking so slow they could have stopped, looking around into space, whatever. Get off the plane at ORD, and I feel comfort in the fact that I'm surrounded by people who all know the drill, and have the brisk paced walk that we need to get where we're going. Not being *******s, just not getting in other people's way.

I walk down the street here and constantly walk around people and cross through lights. (Yeah, the sign says don't walk, but it's a one-way and no cars for blocks)
These people would be eaten alive on Madison/Lasalle any time during the week.
Maybe people in the Bay Area realize that a fast pace, and being in a hurry all the time, doesn't necessarily translate into a better quality of life? Sometimes less really is more.

It sounds to me like you have an attitude. If you're going to live in the Bay Area, perhaps it is you who should learn to adapt to the local customs? Who knows, you might find you like it and you might learn to relax a little.

Type A behavior has been linked to heart attacks. Perhaps it's not a good thing biologically to be in a rush all the time. There's a lot to be said for just going with the flow.

I'm someone who does not like slow walkers at all..HOWEVER, I don't have a problem with them when they aren't impeding my progress. It's fine if you want to walk slowly, that's fine, but don't hold me up doing it. That's my pet peeve.

I find that people here do the same thing though. I can't tell you how many times people infront of me in the morning commute walk and text at the same time in the middle of a busy subway hallway leading to outside. It's like dude, are you serious? Wait until you're outside and not in everyone's way at least.

Chicago is a global city. San Jose is a regional city.

Bay Area lifestyle has a more international feel. You live/work/play with people from a greater diversity of backgrounds.
