I live on the north end and I just purchased a new living room set. Where I lived before I were able to just haul old furniture's out to the dumpster but sense I live in the city now I'm not sure if I can. There is an alley behind my apartment building and a smaller dumpster.
I don't own a truck and don't feel like renting one.
What options do I have?
I do not want to sell it or give it away for free on craigslist because it is in bad condition.

Thanks!

You would be surprised how many people would take a bad couch if you can sit on it, even if you offer it only for $15-$20. Seriously. It's worth a shot.

If you just want to get rid of it though, I'd look up junk removal services. These are companies/people who will come take away stuff like that for you. You have to pay them (they have to make money somehow), but yeah. This company operates in Chicago. I don't know how much it costs, but it's worth asking:

Every place in Chicago I've lived, if you put usable furniture in the alley during a dry spell, it'd be gone in a couple days - often in a couple hours.

You can definitely put it on a alley (i dont think is lega though)and it definately will be gone in a couple of hours. I did that myself a couple of weeks ago.

Also you can put it on sale or for free on craiglist and someone will give you a call. But be smart about who you bring to your house if you go that route.

I've seen some people do both: Put an add on craigslist saying "free couch" and give the location of the alley and the time you'll be putting it out there, first come first served. Then you don't have to bring anyone into your place, and it's less likely to be sitting in your alley a long time.

Just a little fyi because I can be rather pedantic sometimes: You live on the North SIDE - the North END is Boston.

Personally I plan on chopping up my couch in a few weeks before I move. I refuse to move it down this dreaded stair case again.

Very true.

Also, here in Boston/Cambridge, if any chair/couch/table is left on the sidewalk, it's gone within an hour...

Definitely not worth it to go with 1-800-got-junk or any other "pros" to remove even 2-3 pieces of furniture...waaaay too expensive. But I'd recommend scouring craigslist for junkers willing to do it cheap or free if you go the "removal" route.
