Asking for a 30% raise during a recession=greedy.

If they are asking for other things besides a 30% raise, that's not coming through in the media. If reports of them asking for a 30% raise have been grossly over-exaggerated, that's not coming through in the media. All I-and likely the general public-have been hearing about is demands for raises for a minimal increase in work hours. I've seen self-professed teachers on comment boards say that they deserve raises equal to the increase of work time and that since the school day is going to be an extra 10% or so longer, they deserve a 10% raise? REALLY? Is there any other industry that demands this? My work schedule has gone up nearly 20% and the most I've gotten is a $0.50 raise and even that was welcomed considering how much of an impact this recession has had on us. Many people haven't gotten any raises since the recession hit and you've got these people asking for 30% raises??? Definition of greedy.

I tend to agree.

I liked the recent Tribune editorial where they asked:"Why don't both sides make the negotiations public"? After all, it's money coming largely our of our pockets.

If the negotiations were made public they'd quickly devolve into grandstanding sessions.

It's harder to grandstand when nobody's watching.

Sounds like you're upset you have to work more hours without being compensated accordingly. So why are you also upset with people who are fighting against exactly that?

I agree with this. I found this idea very well articulated today on The Afternoon Shift (program #140, here: The Afternoon Shift). If non-union workers have worse pay/benefits/conditions than those being fought for by the unions, it seems strange that the non-union folks would prefer to see the playing field leveled DOWN, rather than UP.
