What about Bridgeport? That is around Halsted and 31st, and seems like families are there. Seems safe. Some old properties and some are being redone. Might try there.

When people say "West Rogers Park," they usually mean West Ridge. It's a great, stable, diverse, and safe neighborhood that deserves consideration by anyone looking for a good and affordable neighborhood in the city. West Ridge is definitely not the same as Rogers Park, which is the next neighborhood to the east.

I understand and agree completely. I'm just saying there are plenty of places on the South and West sides that fit that bill, too, so it was ironic that the person recommending West Rogers Park was also saying to only look at the North Side. Usually the only people who say things like that are the ones who never leave Lincoln Park or Gold Coast, not the people who recommend RP or WRP.

That would be one of several such areas, yes.

I was engaging in two conversations at once.

My comment about only looking on the north and northwest sides was intended for nillmann, who was talking about buying in some of the worst ghetto areas in the country, as though he had never been to Chicago. I was trying to prevent a homicide or maybe we should call it "suicide by thug."

My comment about the $300,000 house was intended for mtestify, who is a more serious poster. I didn't recommend anything in particular, but told a story about a great real estate find by a friend. I never said that was the best or only area mtestify should live in. There are lots of fine areas on the south and west sides, although most city-data posters seem to be to be young educated hipsters, who would feel like they moved to the moon if they found themselves in some of the working-class parts of the south and west sides where $300,000 houses are common. So I do think West Ridge is a reasonable choice, given that I know almost nothing about mtestify and his/her characteristics as a human being.

Many hipsters are working class judging by their jobs, tatoos and clothing. Although I think many of them didn't think they'd end up working class.

Pilsen and Bridgeport have plenty of working class people, "educated hipsters," and houses well under $300,000. Just sayin'.

I live in Andersonville/Uptown/Ravenswood with .6 miles to red line. 1 mile to the Damen Brown line and about one mile from the Ravenswood Metra. On top of the metra and cta the clark 22 buss is basiclly right outside my door, almost.
On a regular day on the red line it takes me 25 minutes with the cta to go from Argyle to Quinsy. The neighborhood is great and very safe. And the prices on nice condoes are not terribly bad. I have seen several of them for under 300k.

I would have guessed Pilsen was more expensive. Heck, I can walk there from the west side of downtown.

I didn't have Bridgeport mentally pegged as an area where young non-Irish people can feel at home; I learn something every day.

Plenty of houses there in the $100Ks, actually.

That era is long gone. 65% of Bridgeport residents aren't even White, let alone Irish. Even back when it was mostly white there were plenty of Italians, Polish, and Lithuanians there with the Irish.
