Immigigation that happened a century ago is a completely different chapter in history than the colonization of America. By "Eastern Europe" I mean the Catholic part of Europe.

Sorry to be nitpicky, but Eastern Europe is Orthodox mainly, with some Lutheran and Catholic and whatnot in there. "Catholic Europe" tends to be Central European (Mitteleuropa, which is now associated with Nazis a little)

Yeah, its too bad the race card had to get brought into this discussion, but... that's Chicago.

Mt. Greenwood, Bridgeport, and Garfield Ridge have been white enclaves, and there's probably still some percentage of people who live there solely because of that reason. You could say the same thing about a lot of Chicago suburbs.

But, Bridgeport (even twenty years ago when I spent a lot of time there) had a significant Latino population and a growing Asian-American population. My friends had grown up with Hispanic best friends in the 1980's. Because families in Bridgeport have a Chicago address, they qualify to apply to magnet programs in the Chicago Public Schools. So for instance, my friend, although he lived in probably one of the most white square miles of the city, chose to go to a public magnet school with a reputation for excellence that was well over 60% minority.

Garfield Ridge... also a growing Latino population.

Mt. Greenwood... probably the least diverse of the three, but it's still the city. People who live and work in the city have lots of exposure to diversity.

You don't see and hear about the changes, and the media only covers these areas when something awful happens (and there are still jerks out there), but quietly and gradually people are becoming accepting.

I still stand by my statement that Mt. Greenwood is a safe, convenient, cozy neighborhood that has the advantages of the city while also having a more suburban character, and possibly is a little bit less expensive than Beverly.

So by "European settlers" you meant "European settlers from a specific era" and by "Eastern Europe" you meant, "Western Europe and Poland." Okay, got it.

Well, neighborhood discussions bring out the racialist discussions =P

I know I know I know...the people who beat up the FOB chinese guy near Bridgeport and Curie were second-gen chinese americans and a hispanic (look up the YT vid) and think some white friends were involved (it was some gang war between FOBs and second+ gen chinese people)

There was some rumor that a black family moved into Mount Greenwood and they burned their grass or something. Forgot what it was. They moved out. There were some weird rumors like actually doing a Cross Burning*

It's not "playing a card" so much as acknowledging reality.

How..."diverse" does she want it then

LOL. In the case of Midway, it's well...north of Midway which is.....uhh weird - not sure about "racist" though a white woman stared at me once and moved her...purse when I walked by her on the bus one time on Archer west of Cicero....

Well I specifically picked on Mount Greenwrood....because you know....stuff
The only person I REALLY know from Mt Greenwood was the Mexican guy who trained me for my job. :P

I have family that still live in Hegweich though..

I don't know about the OP but I'd definitely move to Hegweich (or even the area north of there) before Mt Greenwood. Beverly is very nice though.

Thank you all. I have looked up a couple of the places mentioned and I am excited to check out a few places, Homewood and Beverly looks quite beautiful and we would be able to afford a decent size family home. The thread took an interesting turn with all the comments about race, but I am quickly realizing that it's quite a big deal out here (in the US) . For what it is worth, we are british-black. thank you again for your valuable input.
