CLately I am noticing more and more that the people I know who absolutely love Chicago and truly appreciate its greatness, while the people I know who complain the most about Chicago are black.

We all know that Chicago has a history of racism and segregation and I wonder if this is the reason why white people love it while black people hate it and why, as mentioned in a previoud thread, black are leaving Chicago and moving south.

I am black myself and I have always loved Chicago despite the racism I experienced there. My most family is still in Chicago and they never complain about Chicago and how much they hate it. I have an aunt and uncle wh moved to Atlanta, couldn't stand it and went back to Chicago after only 8 months. My sister had moved to Cali and didn't like it. She loves Chicago and doesn't want to leave. She says there's nothing greater than Chicago in the summer.

But more and more I keep hearing other black people hate it and want to leave. Other black people I have met who left Chicago left because they were fleeing from rough lifestyles there.

I like to hear others' opinions, black, white and in between why love or hate of Chicago is a black or white thing.

The answer is not black and white, pun intended. Some white people hate Chicago and some black people love Chicago. Those that hate it, probably hate the High Taxes, Corrupt Politicians, and increasing violence. I personally love Chicago, but I would live elsewhere too if it made sense to me.

In regards to what I bolded above, I say WTF? You think white people love racism and segregation?

Who knows. Every black/African American person I'm friends with here doesn't complain about it. They never talk about the racism they experience, and I know that many of them don't. I have seen exactly one racist episode in my almost four years in Chicago too. I'm sure it exists, just weird though. Perhaps they are just lucky based on what people always say on this forum..

I didn't mean to imply that white people love it, but rather some blacks do complain about it and I wonder if that is a factor as to why so many blacks complain more about the city.

I think black flight just delayed "white" flight by a few decades.

I put white in parentheses because based on what I've read, "flight" is actually the norm for most ethnic groups. There are substantial numbers of Middle Eastern and Asians who have been moving to outlying suburbs for generations.

The immigrants come to Chicago for jobs, but within a few generations the kids move to the greener pastures of the burbs. At the end of the day it is often easier to move to change your surroundings than to make your existing surroundings change. I think black folks had to fight harder than most to get established communities here and thus may be less prone to leave.

Personally, I know as many people who have left Chicago as those who have stayed, your hypothesis that white folks like Chicago better based on historical events is missing the opinions of the hundreds of thousands of whites who left the City in droves in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.

You misunderstand me. I am well aware of white flight in Chicago and wasn't referring to historical events specifically. I simply looking for individual opinions as to why whites love it and blacks seem to complain.

However Chicago does remain segregated.

You have anecdotal examples, which are hard to respond to.

If there actually is a demonstrable difference in black/white opinions generally, it probably has to do with the fact that, for better or for worse, the black neighborhoods in Chicago were hugely dependent on manufacturing and steel production, two sectors that have just been repeatedly hammered by economic shifts over the past four decades, which happened just after the race riots of the late 60s that scared away a lot of middle class people. That means that majority-black neighborhoods have suffered huge economic hits over and over again. It's been difficult for the neighborhoods to recover for a variety of complex economic, demographic and cultural reasons (for example, people don't want to leave their neighborhood even when the area is hurting and won't recover for a long time). And once an area declines past a certain point, drugs and gangs get control which is very difficult to fight from the top down. For many people Chicago as a whole doesn't matter, and for them "Chicago" is their neighborhood, so if their neighborhood has collapsed, they're gonna hate "Chicago" because that's what Chicago is to them.

I'm a Black transplant who loves Chicago because of the life that I have built for myself. Many resources are here for almost anyone to thrive.

I would say there are 2 categories of Black who hate Chicago. The ones who have never experienced life elsewhere and the transplants who plopps down in the wrong neighborhood and never experience the city.

When discussing segregation and racism with non Black natives, they don't seem to see there being a problem. Some Whites will go so far as to say "it isn't segregated in a bad way". I've noticed many Mexican and Polish immigrants say the same. IMO, it seems native non blacks are more tolerant of segregation than blacks. Also racist can feel more comfortable in a segregated environment than one that is integrated. At the same time I met many racist who live in integrated neighborhoods in Tennessee and North Carolina.

Progressive transplants usually view segregation as a negative if not flat out backwards. Many Black transplants will walk past a construction site and not see anyone who looks like them working and look at the disparity in incomes and high unemployment rates as a major problem for the city where as Whites natives don't think twice about it.

To the op, I understand the question but I don't speak for everyone especially White people. It does seem that Chicago could be a White racialist dream city based upon the few points that I pointed out.

I understood you, I just don't agree with your assumption.

Read Chicago Tribune or Chicago SunTimes story message boards and you will walk away with a completely different perspective, so I think you will need to research the topic a little more scientifically if you are generally interested.

I actually have read them and the N word gets thrown around by whites a lot on there. At least in the comments to articles I have read.
