There needs to be a times square or something that brings big attention to downtown. Downtown really needs a big attraction

I'd say a lakefront attraction would be a good idea... museums... restaurants... theaters... shops.... maybe a big ferris wheel.... Now all we need is a name. Hey, I know: Navy Pier!

I see what Skyline is getting at. obviously times square itself would not fit chicago, but a central gathering place would be nice. millenium park has partially filled that void. Block 37 is where the potential REALLY laid. Unfortunately, the vast potential of that development has been squandered. Really sad.

Navy Pier is removed from the rest of the city..an "island unto itself" if you will. And lets be honest, its nothing more than a glorified mall. I really despise that place. Although I'm sure most resident NY'ers despise what Times Square has morphed into.

Whatever its faults or drawbacks, the fact is Navy Pier already draws some 8 million visitors a year. You personally may hate it; evidently tourists do not. It's not so much "an island unto itself" that the downtown area doesn't benefit from its presence.

When I moved back to Chicago from NYC, the first thing that struck me was: I can see my building's facades. No hideously tacky, sleazy neon signs! On anything! It's fabulous!

That said, times square just isn't our thing. And to be honest, Times Square isn't really a New York thing, either; native New Yorkers view it like we tend to view O'Hare: lots of people come through it and spend money like tourists, but we not-so-secretly wish they'd just go the hell away.

Or be diverted out of the middle of town to, say, a lakeshore location kind of out of everyone else's way.

Well, we soon will have a HUGE attraction in Chicago as the ever so conviently broke CTA will have to be convieniently bailed out by a new casino. AH, Chicago isn't it wonderful? A huge supposed world class city, and the only way to bail out it's public transit system is with the profits of a casino. LOL! What a joke! Anyhow, the casino will be a big draw into the city. Right now the city is just trying to figure out where to put it.

Oh and for the record, I cannot agree with what someone else posted earlier more in their saying that Chicago needs some sort of big draw. Navy Pier is nothing more than a glorified souvenir mall, and block 37??? HMMMM, that one is still open for debate. The Mag Mile, give me Oak Brook Terrace anyday over that, and the Sears Tower? Its ok and The Hancock Center is good. Our museums are nice, but the best in my opinion (Science and Ind) is way off the beaten path. I agree Chicago needs something that is a big draw right in it's downtown. A cold body of water with beaches that let you go in and wade up to your knees before being yelled at by the Gistapo in boats is less than appealing to me. We need something else here. Something other than eatting and shopping destinations. A year round indoor theme park would be nice.

I mean a theme park of more than just video games and virtual reality crap. That stuff sucked. I was there once and it was a HUGE disappointment. I mean something like what the Mall of America has in it. Or those indoor theme parks up in The Dells.
