It's a decidedly negative take on the neighborhood, but is quite entertaining. I live further south in Uptown, but still find time to read this now and then. It will give you at least one point of view about the challenges of living in Rogers Park.
I'm amazed about the fascination about this neighborhood!
it seems like Rogers Park gets more negative media coverage on the 10 o'clock news (WMAQ) than any other neighborhood in Chicago including englewood and austin.

is Rogers Park really that bad?
or is it what the media is choosing to cover?
maybe bashing Rogers Park is good for ratings and entertainment

Rogers Park gets in the news for the following reasons:
  • Legitimate coverage of major crime stories, including two recent daytime murders right out in the open
  • Their crackpot and likely corrupt alderman.
I personally have not noticed a disproportionate share of RP news coverage. Any recent uptick in coverage is probably because of the murders, and I haven't seen anything on those lately. Otherwise, the news outlets don't seem particularly interested in RP.

I think RP gets in the news because the poverty conditions and culture there are more visible to the powers that be. Rogers Park actually has a large number of white middle-class residents, so it's harder for the media to just ignore the problems there. It's also the worst neighborhood in close proximity to the wealthy North Shore, so it's in the public consciousness up there.

Of course, I would say that Englewood has been in the news lately for crime-related stories more than just about any other neighborhood--and this goes against my hypothesis. Englewood seems to be the media's ghetto de jour, even though there are many other neighborhoods with the same level of problems. Perhaps it has to do with the large neighborhood protests and rallies. The media loves to show "fed up" residents marching in the streets against violence and guns. But when these "fed up" residents are asked to cooperate with police, they become silent.
