They used to call that area "Emerald City" because of all the broken green glass all over the streets from the malt liquor bottles.

I am trying to recall the area that I was in this past summer - somewhere not that far from around 65th and Halsted (about two blocks east of Halsted I'd say). I saw more boarded up properties there in a couple of blocks than in any other neighborhood in Chicago. I had spent some time in West Baltimore in 2011, and I always said that I never saw anything akin to that here until I walked those blocks in that area. I didn't feel unsafe, I just was disheartened by the loss of population and investment.

That's Englewood, which is one of the worst neighborhoods in the city.

One night when I was driving home from the north side of Chicago, I decided to cruise and be scenic. So instead of getting on the interstate, I took Halsted from the north side of the city all the way down to Lincoln Highway in Chicago Heights, Illinois. I passed through Englewood but nearby areas north and south of there didn't really look any different. I was surprised when I looked up Englewood on City Data and discovered that a lot of that wasn't Englewood even though it looked and felt exactly the same..

A douchey bar in Wrigleyville after a Cubs game in 2007. Never again.

I could be wrong, but I believe she was having a completely natural reaction to the unbelievably stupid thread you started.

Oh, I know. The brunch places on Madison aren't even open then, and only some of the West Loop yuppie bars have my favorite craft beers on tap. It's the worst.
