Most are from 2010, when the area was worse. but now i see more professionals. and even the beginning of a racial shift.

Good old Wikipedia (so take it with a grain of salt) has the racial breakdown as 95% Black and it seems like those stats came from last year. The median income is 27,000, but I think that is city's median. The Chicago crime page from the Trib lists the income level as 18,000. It also has an unemployment rate of just under 18%. Quality of life crimes and property crimes seem to have decreased dramtically in the last 10 years, but violent crime hasn't dropped as much to indicate a dramatic level of gentrification. No racial info on the Trib site, but I don't see any reason to disagree with Wikipedia's assessment. On a totally unrelated note, I always liked Rainbow Park, but haven't been in a while.

Google "Mapping America" from the New York Times. You can see the demographics using an address, zip code or city.

The Tribune also did a map of race in the city comparing the last two censuses. It's done by ward; I believe South Shore is in the 5th and 7th wards.

You are gonna have to wait till 2020 if the 2010 census data isn't good enough for you.

I've always said there is a lot more to Chicago than the north side. You don't have to throw $12000 a year at a studio in Lincoln Park if you don't want to.
