Didn't it take the Cubs several decades before they allowed night games at Wrigley?

Yep. And the Cubs bent over backwards saying they would never, ever ask for more than the number they were granted. Right.

I am a bleeds Cubbie Blue kinda gent, but the historical revisionism here is off the charts.

The team was the beneficiary of gentrification which had been creeping north from Old Town since the 60s, not the cause of it. They can thank the CTA and the stadium's charm for the fact that the stadium was packed after mediocre after mediocre season. Anyone who thinks that neighborhood would cease to exist without them is clearly out of touch, as Clark St. thrives all year. It is far from being just a baseball-driven sector.

Tunney may be a tool of the rooftop owners, but he is right that the jumbotron is a big, fat negative (and putting advertising on the landmarked sign's clock? WTF!) and NO, The jumbrotron and the ads did not "come with the park" and there is no reason why the neighborhood shouldn't be furious about this.

There is a reason why we have landmarking, it is precisely to avoid this kind of corporate bullying and blackmail. The Cubs don't know how to intelligently spend the money they have already for crying out loud...

It was the last stadium without lights for a long time.

Theo isn't the problem, at least, not yet.

But an aspect of this which has completely gone under the radar is that we are dealing with a baseball franchise here, which is far from being just any old "business" - the MLB is a state-sanctioned monopoly.

The History of Baseball's Antitrust Exemption - Beyond the Box Score

So MLB franchise owners are already receiving benefits far out of reach to other American businesses. Amazing that Tunney didn't think to ever bring this up.

Theo is our savior.

These next two to three summers will be where he goes into God-mode as arguably the best GM in baseball and makes the Cubs a contender with all the money the Cubs have. Trades, FA signings, etc. Pitching is our main concern now. Hopefully he can nab an ace from somewhere -- possibly David Price from Tampa Bay.

You cannot buy a baseball team unless you are the Yankees. I will not be a fan of Theo if he mortgages the future. Farm system, farm system, farm system.

It's better to do a combination of farm system and buying kind of like what the Dodgers have done. The Yankees have more money in their pockets, yes, so they can just get anyone they want. I'm not saying he should mortgage the future, but we're going to have to get some our pitching from elsewhere. The farm system has no pitching whatsoever, meanwhile, the Cubs payroll isn't very high which means they're going to spend on free agents. The Cubs TV deal will also kick in next year, whether they decide to make their own channel (i.e. YES for the Yankees) or they renew with WGN.

Pitching is a major league disaster, agreed. Fingers crossed they turn it around, our luck with the big signings has been rather dismal in recemt years... We seem cursed with superstars who have mental issues.
