It's like the black people and the fried chicken and watermelon nonsense. I've never had a white friend (or Asian for that matter) who doesn't eat fried chicken or watermelon. Everyone loves fried chicken. Who the heck doesn't love fried chicken?! When we have catered events here at work (or at any job I've had) and there's chicken or watermelon, the white people are eating it just the same. So what gives? My first job as a teen was at Popeye's in Calumet City. We had plenty of white customers. Why was that made into a negative stereotypes against blacks?

Racism made chicken and watermelon a negative stereotype against black people.

I get that but why make it a negative stereotype against black people when just about everyone loves fried chicken and watermelon? If a black person eats watermelon, he/she is a "porch monkey." If a white person eats watermelon, there's nothing racist said about it. That's all I'm saying.

A white person and a black person can do the exact same thing but it's only negative when a black person does it.

Just a double standard.

Precisely. Blacks and whites are held to completely different standards for doing the exact same thing, with blacks being stereotyped, criticized, and harshly judged. And it's been engrained in all of us through centuries of social conditioning.

I've never understood it, myself. A few ideas here ranging from Birth of A Nation to the fact you eat fried chicken with your hands to chickens being animals slaves were allowed to keep.

Where Did That Fried Chicken Stereotype Come From? : Code Switch : NPR

pancocojams: The Story Behind The Stereotype Of Black People & Fried Chicken

btw, I didn't see Birth of a Nation until they showed it on PBS as part of some African American History programming a few years back. WTF is all I can say about it, and Reconstruction is not given nearly enough attention by the public schools.

The really good type of Fried Chicken with some kick to it came from the south, so the stereotype was probably assigned to African Americans by northern whites as blacks moved north as part of the Great Migration. This was long before there was a KFC or Popeyes in every town. It's southern food, and I think that it was always just as popular with white southerners as it was with black southerners.

Devil's advocate point, this Toronto mayor/professional buffoon is being raked over the coals just like Marion Barry was.

However, we'll see if he actually gets re-elected. The media is reporting that this guy still has over a 40% approval rate.

You ever seen "Good Bye Uncle Tom?" It's the most graphic depiction of the slave trade I've ever seen. Let's just say I couldn't get through the first 20 minutes of it.

It makes Amistad look like The Sound of Music.
