OK, and if you want to take a ride then use the elevator.

I don't want to climb, I don't want to stand still either.
Your comment makes about as much sense as; "If you want to stand still, stay at home"

"OK, and if you want to ride, take a bus and stay off the sidewalk"

Lack of etiquette personified. Don't let the escalator trip you on your one-way ride out of town :-)

Apparently they're both silent on the subject -- at least I couldn't find anything about escalators listed in the index of either book (although they did have listings for elevator usage).

So, given the lack of consensus on the subject on this very thread, I have to conclude that no hard and fast rules have really been established on this issue.
google escalator etiquette and see what you find...like this poll of almost 3,000 DCers.

I don't take the CTA as often (since I don't work in the city) but it used to be pretty much impossible to take the stairs certain times of the day. If the escalators are going up, people who are coming down are walking down the stairs. How is someone supposed to walk up the stairs with a massive crowd coming down the stairs? Is it that difficult to move to one side?

IMHO, the kind of people that stand on the left and refuse to budge are the same ones that order a half decaf, half regular, light foam, extra hot latte with one splenda and one raw sugar.

it's not about having a preference. it's about taking the opportunity to exert a little bit of power over those around you.

hey look at me! i can drive in the passing lane going 55 and there's nothing you can do about it.

ugh.

I drink my coffee plain cream and sugar. On the highway I drive fast and yield the left lane to those going faster. But on commercial escalators I don't give a damn. And you're right, there's nothing you can do about it.

So, you're cool with people going slow in the passing lane then?

No, I don't equate driving on the highway with riding the escalators at Macy's.
