Hi. I am planning on moving to Edgewater this summer and I just want other people's opinions on what the area east of Broadway between Hollywood (5700N) and Devon/Sheridan (6400N) is like in terms of safety. I would especially like to know if it is safe to park my car west of Broadway and walk back and forth to whichever apartment I end up moving into at around 3am (because I know the parking is really crappy east of Broadway and I want to try to avoid the extra $100 these apartments typically charge for parking). I work in Evanston but I have to drive to work in the Summer because I start work at 4am and the purple line doesn't start running until 4:30am so I do need to have my car (unfortunately) to go to work.

And in case you're wondering, I will be 23 when I move and I am a 5'9" male.

I live on Granville and I've never felt unsafe in the area. I don't do much walking around at 3 am, since I'm normally asleep then, but there are tons of people that park their cars between Broadway and Clark. I could see how the part of Clark north of the Andersonville area might be a little iffy. On Brodways as you get closer to the Loyola campus area, I feel that the area becomes a little safer due to the presence of more people (mostly college kids) out later. If you are really concerned about it, I know that at least some of the buildings in Edgewater charge <$100 for parking (including my own), so some places may be more affordable than you think.

Even crazy streetpeople tend not to lurk in the wee hours of the morning. There are stats that show folks are least safe in residential areas when the majority of folks are still at work...

Folks that work a schedule which routinely requires them to be at work very early are statisically less likely to encounter crime than those who are roaming when the "after bar closing" rowdies are NOT availing themselves of a designated driver / taxi / public transit...

The area between Loyola and Granville is safe. Loyola has its hands on a lot of the property and plans to expand that way eventually (they also rent alot of the apartments in that area for student housing....my friend lives in the building with the Aldi and there is a Loyola Security office located on Granville. West of Broadway is safe too.

Ehh, I don't really feel comfortable biking past Howard at that time of the morning. But I might consider it after seeing chet everett's post. I could use the exercise too!!!

Okay that makes me feel better about being out at that time. I might even just ride my bike to work because I could use the exercise and I can save on gas...at least in the summer.

I figured it would be. My first choice is The Sovereign located at 1040 W. Granville with my second and third choices being at Sheridan and Thorndale and Kenmore and Thorndale respectively. I have driven around the area but only during the daytime so that's why I was wondering about the safety at night.

I live right nearby, and the Sovereign is just soso. The plus is its location nearby the train stop as well as Metropolis (excellent coffee); I've been told that the apartments themselves are just mediocre and maintenance can be iffy. Oh, and I wouldn't recommend the Thai place in the first floor. You'll get much better food at Summer just by the El entrance.
