I am possibly moving to Chicago (The Loop) for school and heard about the dismal nightlife there. Is there any good places to hangout? Is it true things close at 5pm. Why is this? Thanks

I assume you are moving to the south LOOP? For many years that area of the city was not a residential one, but it is now changing, however, the nightlife and resturant options are still catching up with all the new residential buildings that are going up, but no fear, you are only a few subway/el stops or a short taxi ride away from nightlife that exists in other parts of the city. Not all parts of any city are teaming with nightlife, etc. and that part of Chicago is one of them.

The Loop itself refers to the business district, which empties after working hours. The nightlife is found further north, in River North and Lincoln Park.

Check out metromix if you're looking for info on nightlife. It lets you break it down by neighborhood.

The Loop proper has very little nightlife aside from some stage theatres. The South Loop, where most of the Loop universities are has a little more, but still hasn't quite gained the nightlife one might expect for an area with so many students.

However, River North is just one to two miles north of the South Loop - 10 minutes via "L", bus or subway - and it has a lot of nightlife. Then another 10 minutes north of that is Lincoln Park and Lakeview, which both have a lot of nightlife, too. Plus, the West Loop has some nightlife along Lake Street, which is 10-15 minutes away by bus or "L" depending on where you're going. Wicker Park is also only 10-15 minutes away and it has a lot of great nightlife.

So, basically, there's not so much you'll be literally walking to (although you could walk to River North), but there's plenty you can get to quickly and easily without a car.
