I am moving to Chicago and looking at two potential apartments. One close to the Rockwell brown line stop and one close to the Thorndale red line stop. Both areas looked nice to me. I have timed the commute downtown from each. Does anyone familar with these areas know any other factors I should consider. We are a young couple without children looking for a dog friendly area. Thanks.

Rockwell is nice, but quieter and with less convenient transit-access to the north lakefront. It would have good walking access to the Lincoln Square neighborhood.

Thorndale is ok, but not quite as peaceful. It has better access to the whole north lakefront, as well as to Evanston, and walking access to the beach. It would be somewhat cooler in the summer because of the proximity to the Lake.

If you like relatively peaceful areas and think you'll mostly stick within walking distance of your place, I'd go with Rockwell. If you don't mind a little more hustle-and-bustle in your neighborhood and think you'll want to be actively going out to other parts of the city, and/or think you'd actually walk to the beach on a regular basis, I'd go with Thorndale.

The area around the Rockwell station on the Brown Line is 'small town' like. I really enjoy that neighborhood. It and the area around the Thorndale station are apples to oranges comparisions, IMO. Different types of people are attracted to each. Me, personally ... I would select the Rockwell station neighborhood.

I would move there in a minute if I didn't have a mortgage on where I'm at now.

It's probably b/c the Brown Line runs on the street at that point so it doesn't seem big.
