You should talk to Drover. I believe he said he pays abouy $900 for a 2 bedroom. You should also consider the near suburbs of Oak Park and Evanston. They have easy access to the city, but are cheaper.

How large a place? There are plenty of 1 or 1 1/2 bedrooms in safe areas for that range.

For $1100 you could get a small two-bedroom in Edgewater a few years back... I live in Buena Park (the southern part of Uptown adjacent to Lakeview), and 2-BRs in my condo building have been renting for about $1450! You could definitely find something cheaper in Buena Park as well, but I'd stay south of Montrose if safety is a priority. You really have to be careful about what you look at in Uptown, Edgewater, and Rogers Park. All of these neighborhoods are block by block. The parts of Buena Park along the lakefront are quite safe, as are the parts of edgewater along the lakefront.
