I am putting down an offer on a condo in Albany Park near the intersection of Montrose and Kimball. My question is, how safe is the area/how is it for things to do? My husband and I are both mid to late 20s (and we're a gay couple). I've never really heard anything about the area and nobody I know seems to know much either.

Default Info is out there

I really would not recomend that area for purchase for a gay couple unfamilar with Chicago. There are several active Hispanic gangs and the potential for conflict / violence is higher than other areas that have a more gay friendly population.

There have been threads about the area fairly recently: Albany Park Area/Safety

I live not far from there, it's OK, heavily working class; Mexicans, Arabs, Euros, very diverse as they say. My barber is an old German guy at Montrose and Kedzie. I get my bicycles worked on at Iron Cycles on Montrose a block east of Kedzie.

The area is not bad IMO. Yeah there's a few gangs but I don't think terribly active. Anytime I've been in that area it's been completely normal. There is actually a great Korean run Chinese restaurant not far from there there and some good Mexican stuff. Last time I was there not long ago there were some street food carts too. If you go to Kedzie, then there's a number of Arab things there (bakeries, markets, restaurants, etc). I like Albany Park a lot because it's a cool mix of a lot of different peoples.

The condos in front of the train station?

There's gonna be a lotta teens acting up during school days.

The gay thing shouldn't be a problem.

That neighborhood is desensitized to different cultures.

My partner and I are moving into a condo near Wilson and Kedzie (by Kedzie brown line). We are both a bit nervous about the neighborhood. We have no problem with a little sketch - we're coming from Logan Square after all, but we just can't get a good feel for Albany Park. Is anyone familiar with the area directly around the Kedzie brown line stop? Are there any concerns or tips you can share?

I personally really don't find that area too sketchy. There is an adequate amount of middle eastern stuff around the Kedzie Brown Line. That's my tip.

I don't either, and if anything, the area has gotten nicer recently. We have friends who live near there and like it. There is a pizza place that was a crap shack, it was rehabbed into what appears to be a very nice looking place with a great beer garden. My favorite chicken place is Brasa Roja at Montrose just east of Kedzie. Arun's is on Kedzie, though I haven't been in years, it was very good in the past.

Is that the one on Kedzie just south of the station? If so then yeah, nice place...There's some decent food in the area.
