Yeah, good book, I second the recommendation. However, it only covers 19th century Chicago.

It's a great book, but not really lengthy the Encyclopedia of Chicago & American Pharaoh, now those are lengthy.

A few others I'd suggest:

Boss & any and all collections of Royko's columns. Al Capone. Mr. Capone. The Outfit. The Chicago River. There Are No Children Here. The Making of a King. The History of Beer and Brewing in Chicago. Devil and the White City. Working by Studs Terkel. So many more of course...

I just finished this, it's awesome:

Sudhir Venkatesh: Gang Leader for a Day

And this ought to be taught in schools:

Rogues, Rebels, And Rubber Stamps: The Politics Of The Chicago City Council, 1863 To The Present (Urban Policy Challenges): Dick Simpson: 9780813397634: Amazon.com: Books

Yeah, I should have been more clear on that. Excellent book on 19th century Chicago.

Default Keep The Cows In The Country! Thank You

Today is the anniversary of The Great Chicago Fire,

Thank goodness for farmers keeping their herds outside of city limits and modern building materials which some are fire resistant.

Great Chicago Fire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quote:
The Great Chicago Fire was a conflagration that burned from Sunday, October 8, to early Tuesday, October 10, 1871, killing hundreds and destroying about 3.3 square miles (9 km2) in Chicago, Illinois.[1] Though the fire was one of the largest U.S. disasters of the 19th century, the rebuilding that began helped develop Chicago as one of the most populous and economically important American cities.
