Man Ambushed in Baseball Bat Attack After Breaking Up Rogers Park Bar Fight - Rogers Park - DNAinfo.com Chicago

The culture of violence in this city needs to be dealt with. I hope the entire judicial system eventually stops f**king around and starts handing out life sentences like business cards.

"It's expensive to keep a prisoner."

"Ever hear of Siberia?"

Grreat...

"Davis was found about midnight in the 1400 block of West Jarvis Avenue after multiple witnesses called police. The witnesses said they saw two attackers arguing with Davis before they "began to strike the victim on the head with a baseball bat," said Officer Daniel O'Brien, a police spokesman."

So Davis puts himself in harms way and stops the initial bar fight, but no one comes to his defense when he needs it. Thanks a lot...

Read that a few days ago and it pissed me off. Stuff like this unfortunately happens in other places of the world. Nonetheless, tragic. I hope they will (a) have a fundraiser for the guy and (b) I hope he'll be okay in the end. He wasn't even confrontational about it either.

It does but I don't think even adjusted for population you get stuff like this is as prevalent in, say, Minnesota. In short I know there is a disagreement about this but do I think it happens more here? Yes. And do I think that there is a broken culture largely responsible for it? Yep.

Minnesota? No, but Minnesota doesn't have any truly big cities (and yes it doesn't happen in MN from time to time). If you look at the Los Angeles, NYC, Baltimore, Boston, Detroit, DC, etc of the world then yes it does happen..

Honestly, per capita at least, I don't think it happens as much here versus other parts as you may think. Does it happen more than Seattle? Obviously, but compare it to other cities. It's just like the crime stuff. Battery and Assault in Chicago are like 35th highest in the US, not even close to the top 10.

I don't think you can compare a city and state necessarily. Certainly stuff like this report isn't the norm across the entire state of Illinois. But then, there is no other city of this magnitude with this wide of a population diversity in Illinois, let alone the rest of the Midwest. However, I will say that crazy things like this were becoming more and more prevalent in Madison before I moved; also, it seems that at least homicides are increasing in Indianapolis, so I don't think it's safe to conclude that this is a Chicago-only problem.

These types of things frustrate me as well, but they also need to be put into perspective. Chicago is a huge city, with a large population of Crazies/Thugs/Gang Bangers/etc that do cause problems. Is crime here noticeably worse than say Boston/New York/Los Angeles? From my experience, Yes; but travel to Baltimore/St Louis/New Orleans/Etc. and Chicago doesn't seem nearly as bad.

I would hardly qualify this as a 'battery and assault.'

If they're caught they will almost certainly be charged with attempted homicide.

America has the highest crime rate and yet it has more prisoners than any first world country. You say the justice system is "f***ing around" and yet let me repeat, we have more prisoners than any first world country. Obviously incarceration doesn't work. Creating a healthier society with social programs works. Like many European counties..
