To each their own. I won't tell you what is safe, FOR YOU. I only offer my opinion, based on what I know of gang members and the violence that is still rampant.

Just to be clear I am speaking of the actual PARKS, not Humboldt Park as a neighborhood (which, incidentally I do feel safe when I go visit friends there, but I can see why others may not). On the other hand, I do think Logan Square is perfectly safe (where Palmer Sq located).

I'd possibly head to Palmer Square park, but NOT Humboldt. I know members of nefarious natures that still carry in that park, because their homies are stationed close, and they wouldn't think TWICE before popping a round off, and screw the people in the path of fire.

Sad. Sickening.

I remember, many years back, when a known gang members family home burnt down.. right there, along Humboldt Park. I collected everything I could from all my sources, to get his family at least COMFORTABLE til the insurance kicked in. "Insurance"? LOL..... no such thing when they rent, have nothing, don't CARE about anything, show zero respect for life... And yet, when the family came out of that house, and I saw his mother wailing and barely able to stand, the pain of losing everything she owned...... It was all I could do to get her to a neighbor's home, into the bathtub, and relaxed to the point where she wasn't screaming she wanted to die.

It changes your thought process about the people in the neighborhood, but not the ACTIONS that still prevail.

I LOVE both parks. And I STILL won't walk in H.P., no matter the time of day. As I've said, I know too many who are still using that area to be jackasses.

Some day.... I hope... things will change.

*sorry for the tangent*

What are people's thoughts on Old Irving Park? I'm not familiar with the north side at all.

Also, is Bridgeport pretty safe? Any areas to stay within or avoid?

As someone from the neighborhood, my opinon is that Halsted east to the Expressway is preferable. I'd say 28th St. to the North and Pershing to the south. Stay within these borders and you should be fine.

It has been mentioned here that the diagonal streets that ran along Archer on the West side of Bridgeport experience more crime. There is also a CHA project at 31st and Halsted.

The neighborhood is safe but one should be carefull walking after midnight by themselves etc.
