Quality budget lodging, Chicago
I usually hang out in the Raleigh, NC forum, but had a Chicago related question.
Due to a budget shortfall at my organization, our travel funding has been suddenly cut, and I'm finding myself needing to fund an upcoming conference in Chicago, and am thus, looking for budget accommodations.
The conference HQ is the Hyatt Regency Chicago on 151 East Wacker Drive. While I'd prefer to stay nearby, I'm also willing to commute in from a suburb as long as I can walk to a metra or bus station and there are a few restaurants around. Any suggestions on some good, safe, clean budget choices? I'm even willing to consider hostels as long as I can have a private room. I don't need a private bathroom.

You might want to do a search, as I believe people have made suggestions in the past. Before you go trapsing off to the burbs, I would try to name your price at priceline.com. I've done it in the past (you can say which neighborhood, how many starts, etc) and I've gotten really good deals.

I'd recommend staying somewhere near O'Hare or Midway airports- the prices are much much lower than in the city and you'll have access to the el from either airport.

Hotel Wacker was always a cheap place to stay and it is right in the Loop if it is still there. Was about $20 or so a night or you could pay by the hour! Think it is where the "Blues Brothers" stayed in the movie- and no that chick with the Grand Prix did not really blow the place up!

My suggestion: don't stay anywhere that charges by the hour. (or $20 a night for that matter!!!)
And I could be wrong, but it's my understanding that you'll always be sharing a room at a hostel.

You could stay at the Hyatt Regency, I have seen rooms there for around $100 a night. You really will not find anything cheaper downtown (worth staying at) then $100. You could stay at a hostel. Staying in the burbs is not worth saving $30-$50 a night, the commute time will negate the money savings, if you have to go downtown and back several times.
