If you can make the train in time, my advice is to get a place near the Clybourn Metra stop, and take the Union Pacific Northwest train out to Des Plaines. If you live near this stop, that means you also would be right next to 90/94 meaning that you could drive out to work as well (just be sure to beat the damn traffic) if you really insist on driving lol. The Clybourn Metra appears to be a slightly industrial area, but in all honesty the stop is a very short cab ride to Lincoln Park / Lakeview / Gold Coast, Bucktown / Wicker Park, basically all the night life could imagine. Get a place a short distance from this stop and take advantage of the train. Cab it from the Des Plaines stop to your job. If you're making $64K a year, believe me, you can afford taking a few cab rides here & there (in combination with the Metra, CTA & Pace). It's worth not having to put up with horrendous L.A. style traffic jams and crazy-ass Kennedy Expressway drivers.

I have some friends who live in the Gold Coast area and would like to live somewhere near them as they'll be the only people I know, at first anyway. I'm comfortable with spending some decent money on housing expenses for that year as I have nothing else to spend it on aside from beer My question is: what kind of commute should I expect? I own a car, but for $400 a mo. for parking (thats what my friend pays anyway) I'm considering public tans. (I'm from Columbus, OH so the idea of not having a car is pretty foreign. we have no public trans.) The homework I've done makes me feel like the Gold Coast is a pretty nice neighborhood... any other suggestions for a young professional interested in being able to walk to some nightlife? I don't need to live in the most uppity part of town and don't really dig the super high-end bars and clubs, I've been going to college type bars for 5 years and have more fun in places with a little character. Thoughts? Thanks!

I'm not saying that living in the suburbs is social suicide, but as a young person who lives in the suburbs and wishes she didn't, I feel like I've got to give my honest opinion. My commute next year will be no fun, as I will be living in the Wicker Park area and I'll be taking the BNSF metra out to Westmont and then getting on a bus to get to work. But to me it will be worth it.

if i was faced with moving to the burbs out of the city where i live now, i would just pack it up and move back to the coast. i can't imagine it could be too fun out there if you're young, single & love to mingle.
