I'm going out of town for work from tomorrow til next saturday, and I need to park my car close to my workplace. I'm trying to not spend a ton of money, and all the inexpensive lots nearby are open air. I work in the South Loop so any parking I do will be in the same area. But I'm a little concerned about the safety of my car. It's new but nothing fancy to stand out, and the car will be basically empty so there won't be any particular reason for anyone to target my car over any others in the lot.

If I park in a lot like that, do you think I run much of a risk of someone vandalizing or breaking into the car?

Not enough info.

Seriously. There is a whole heckuva of lot of differnce between an unattended open air lot near where kids hang out or bums look for stuff to turn into cash and an attended lot that is near to ONLY offices and cops roust bums...

It is also a heckuva lot smarter to put your car in any kind of "long term" surface lot ot ramp style parking garage even if that means it is out by the airport(s). Those places have near ZERO kids or bums hanging around and likely cost no more than spots closer in. Take the El back....

Make sure the lots you're thinking about have provisions for overnight parking. Many near me 'close' at midnight or 0200, and the tow trucks arrive very shortly after that time .

that's what insurance is for... I recetly left my car at a lot at 300 W. Huron for a week and did not have any issues.

Take anything valuable out of the car beforehand. This will prevent most chances of vandalism. People don't normally break into cars unless they see something they want to steal.

Pay lots would be somewhat safer than just parking on a side street somewhere, though around the Loop it would be a lot more expensive. You may be better off leaving your car in a non-permit parking section of a safer neighborhood and taking public transportation to where you need to go. Just make sure to check the street-sweeping schedule for that week to avoid getting a ticket.

Exactly. Most of the cars parked in Chicago are parked in the "open air." A few get broken into. Most don't.

Wait a minute. Are you worried about leaving your car in the South Loop for a week? I just want to be clear on location.

And like no other person in the whole metro region would the be clued in that one particular car in one particular place is a whole lot more sealable ...

Seriously bad idea.

Of the OP has half a brain they will park at long term lot at one of the airports. People leave / enter at all hours of the night. Very low probability of anything going wrong.

If we can leave cars unattended for weeks on the west side, I'm sure the OP will be a-ok in the South Loop. This really shouldn't be a question.
