I will take the most monkey ball blowing drive to Madison any day before I'd want to deal with Indiana's roads.

It's also a topographical thing, WI has nice rolling hills and views, IN is like downstate IL, a drive of spiritual futility.

Far downstate Illinois has those same rolling hills and nice views, but the original point was that somehow the drives around Milwaukee were more pleasant than those to Indianapolis, which I find random because neither are particularly scenic unless you get close to the lake in Milwaukee. A lot of southern Wisconsin is the same fields and 4-line highways with a few hills here and there. Neither are what I would ever nominate as the most scenic drive in the Midwest.

Of course the difference is those rolling hills downstate are some 6 hours away. Whereas you don't have to go too far into Wisconsin before you hit the driftless area. You also don't have to go very far before you start seeing actual trees and not just endless fields of corn.

Not to mention the overall condition of the infrastructure. Wisconsin does a far better job of maintaining its highway infrastructure and assuring adequate capacity because it's crucial to their tourism industry, which forms a much larger part of its economy than Indiana. Because, you know, there's actually sh*t to do and see up there. Yeah, they sometimes have trouble keeping up with the freeze/thaw cycles, especially during recent fiscally lean years. But they're still miles ahead of Indiana. And realistically, the only portion of highway in southern Wisconsin that is still only 4 lanes that needs to be widened is the stretch of 90 to Madison, which is in the process of being widened. 94 is at least 6 lanes, sometimes 8, from Pleasant Prairie clear to and through Milwaukee out to Pewaukee. And the stretch between the state line and Mitchell is being modernized -- completely rebuilt in some stretches-- as we speak. They'll probably need to think about widening 94 through Waukesha County in the next decade or two, but for now it's still adequate.

Wisconsin is a much more pleasant drive than Indiana (Illinois for that matter) for a number of reasons.

Better education system all-around, though their governor has been doing his damnedest to change that.
