They asked the wrong questions, gave the wrong answers, and showed their knowledge of the issues doesn't extend beyond a few twitter hashtags.
I have to agree with this. It was very disappointing, and made me question the validity of ALL of their work. The HBO show is veiled in a cool Brooklyn hipster veneer that supposedly lends authenticity, but behind this is the same sensationalist B.S. spewed by Fox News in regard to Chicago crime. They could find some gangsters behaving in the same deplorable manner in just about any mid-size to large American city.

They screw it up from the very beginning when they talk about crime rates falling in the 1990s in most major cities, but say this didn't happen in Chicago. Chicago had HUGE crime decreases in the 1990s, and the city is currently at it's lowest rate of violent crime since the 1960s. New York and Los Angeles had greater crime reductions than Chicago, so our raw violent crime numbers are now higher than in those two cities. But Chicago's crime rate is pretty much in the middle of the pack for big cities nationally.

Their stuff that hasn't aired on HBO is pretty interesting. To me at least.

I was also curious as to the origin of the term "Chiraq." I can't find anything online which states it originated from right-wing blogs. The origin seems unknown. I would think the creators of the Vice series are left-leaning hipster types as an earlier poster mentioned.

I saw it in 2008 on those chicagotribune comments section. people with the confederate flag, or a bald eagle using sneaked in racist remarks used CHIRAQ during that year we hit the 500 mark in murders.

It didn't catch on to ghetto idiots till like 2011

...why this article which quotes respected UofC professor making no mention of its redneck roots -- Shootings and murders have declined, but city's gritty urban moniker gets more popular - Page 2 - Chicago Tribune

Makes perfect sense to the conspiracy theorist types that they expunge any "comments sections from 2008" especially those with rebel flags

there are some pretty cool episodes of vice travel.

the reason i like some of what they do is that they actually go out there and get involved in stories and situations that the vast majority of the media reports on from production studios. i admire that and it represents a sense of active journalism that is all but dead in today's world.

however, on the flip side, they can fall prey to hype and sensationalism all the same.

the chicago piece was notably full of ****.

The Chicago Tribune, like all major newspapers, maintains a pretty extensively index set of archives. It would have extremely easy for the Trib itself to find references to "Chiraq" in it's archives if they really did go back 5 years. Similarly all major universities have access to Lexis/Nexis and the Profesor could have found such a reference. So either it never existed or it got "expunged". One makes your recollection less than accurate the other makes you a "black helicopter" type...
