Maybe, but I am pretty sure LA metro median household income has declined more than Chicago metro over those years.

I've seen a lot of out-of-state plates in Illinois lately. Mostly Missouri and Minnesota, but Jersey is another one I see often. It always makes me wonder who's hiring.

Funny you mention that, this weekend when we took a stroll I looked at the license plates in our neighborhood (I know, I'm weird). It was close to 25% of the plates being non IL on our walk. I don't live in a hip area either, though it's a nice part of town. Missouri, Wisconsin, Florida, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Texas, California, Maryland, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, NY, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Colorado all within 4 blocks of my house. Obviously some of these people may be visiting family/friends, but there are a lot of people moving around.

I'm surprised at the diversity every time. I always think, "When did Illinois become cool?" LOL Even though Missouri is right next door, traditionally, I don't think Chicago was the first destination for the upwardly mobile, college-educated set, unlike IA, WI and MI.

Yeah... Well you figure from many areas in MO Chicago isn't too much closer than Houston, Dallas, and Denver so I think it's subject to the pull of other large cities besides Chicago.
